Book Description
Prosodic development is increasingly recognized as a fundamental stepping stone in first language acquisition. Prosodic sensitivity starts developing very early, with newborns becoming attuned to the prosodic properties of the ambient language, and it continues to develop during childhood until early adolescence. In the last decades, a flourishing literature has reported on the varied set of prosodic skills that children acquire and how they interact with other linguistic and cognitive skills. This book compiles a set of seventeen short review chapters from distinguished experts that have contributed significantly to our knowledge about how prosody develops in first language acquisition. The ultimate aim of the book is to offer a complete state of the art on prosodic development that allows the reader to grasp the literature from an interdisciplinary and critical perspective. This volume will be of interest to scholars and students of psychology, linguistics, cognitive science, speech therapy, and education.

Courses on Speech Prosody
Author: Alexsandro Rodrigues Meireles
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443882976
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 205
Book Description
In recent years, speech prosody research in Brazil has grown significantly, mainly due to a series of events organized through the support of the Brazilian government. The two most important of these events are the biennial Brazilian Colloquium on Speech Prosody and School of Prosody, both of which attract a number of prominent Brazilian and international researchers. Due to the success of the 1st Brazilian Colloquium on Speech Prosody, the Luso-Brazilian Association of Speech Sciences (LBASS) was created in 2007 to support the organization of the Speech Prosody 2008 Conference, which was held in Campinas in May of that year. This international conference, organized by Dr Plínio Barbosa, Dr César Reis, and Dr Sandra Madureira, followed the success of the previous avenues of study, and brought together prosodic researchers from all over the world. The primary motivation for this book is the dearth of textbooks dealing directly with speech prosody methodology and data. As such, this volume offers a selection of the most attended prosody courses provided during the II School of Prosody at the Federal University of Espirito Santo in 2012. Consequently, this enterprise will not only contribute to prosody education in Brazil, but will also have a significant impact on prosody education in other countries.

Understanding Prosody
Author: Oliver Niebuhr
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 9783110301250
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 329
Book Description
The volume represents a state-of-the-art snapshot of the research on prosody for phoneticians, linguists and speech technologists. It covers well-known models and languages. How are prosodies linked to speech sounds? What are the relations between prosody and grammar? What does speech perception tell us about prosody, particularly about the constituting elements of intonation and rhythm? The papers of the volume address questions like these with a special focus on how the notion of context-based coding, the knowledge of prosodic functions and the communicative embedding of prosodic elements can advance our understanding of prosody.

The Music of Everyday Speech
Author: Ann Wennerstrom
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0195143213
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 338
Book Description
There is a growing interest among discourse analysts in incorporating the crucial element of prosody into the analysis of spoken language. These studies have tended to focus on specific aspects of prosody rather than presenting an over-all framework within which future analysis might continue. This volume establishes such a framework, and will consider the role of prosody in a variety of discourse genres. Using naturally occuring data, the author demonstrates how the examination of prosody can enhance traditional analysis.

Speech Prosody in Speech Synthesis: Modeling and generation of prosody for high quality and flexible speech synthesis
Author: Keikichi Hirose
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3662452588
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 212
Book Description
The volume addresses issues concerning prosody generation in speech synthesis, including prosody modeling, how we can convey para- and non-linguistic information in speech synthesis, and prosody control in speech synthesis (including prosody conversions). A high level of quality has already been achieved in speech synthesis by using selection-based methods with segments of human speech. Although the method enables synthetic speech with various voice qualities and speaking styles, it requires large speech corpora with targeted quality and style. Accordingly, speech conversion techniques are now of growing interest among researchers. HMM/GMM-based methods are widely used, but entail several major problems when viewed from the prosody perspective; prosodic features cover a wider time span than segmental features and their frame-by-frame processing is not always appropriate. The book offers a good overview of state-of-the-art studies on prosody in speech synthesis.

The Prosody of Greek Speech
Author: A.M. Devine
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 019972413X
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 584
Book Description
The reconstruction of the prosody of a dead language is, on the face of it, an almost impossible undertaking. However, once a general theory of prosody has been developed from eliable data in living languages, it is possible to exploit texts as sources of answers to questions that would normally be answered in the laboratory. In this work, the authors interpret the evidence of Greek verse texts and musical settings in the framework of a theory of prosody based on crosslinguistic evidence and experimental phonetic and psycholinguistic data, and reconstruct the syllable structure, rhythm, accent, phrasing, and intonation of classical Greek speech. Sophisticated statistical analyses are employed to support an impressive range of new findings which relate not only to phonetics and phonology, but also to pragmatics and the syntax-phonology interface.
