In recent years, speech prosody research in Brazil has grown significantly, mainly due to a series of events organized through the support of the Brazilian government. The two most important of these events are the biennial Brazilian Colloquium on Speech Prosody and School of Prosody, both of which attract a number of prominent Brazilian and international researchers. Due to the success of the 1st Brazilian Colloquium on Speech Prosody, the Luso-Brazilian Association of Speech Sciences (LBASS) was created in 2007 to support the organization of the Speech Prosody 2008 Conference, which was held in Campinas in May of that year. This international conference, organized by Dr Plínio Barbosa, Dr César Reis, and Dr Sandra Madureira, followed the success of the previous avenues of study, and brought together prosodic researchers from all over the world. The primary motivation for this book is the dearth of textbooks dealing directly with speech prosody methodology and data. As such, this volume offers a selection of the most attended prosody courses provided during the II School of Prosody at the Federal University of Espirito Santo in 2012. The volume addresses issues concerning prosody generation in speech synthesis, including prosody modeling, how we can convey para- and non-linguistic information in speech synthesis, and prosody control in speech synthesis (including prosody conversions). A high level of quality has already been achieved in speech synthesis by using selection-based methods with segments of human speech. Although the method enables synthetic speech with various voice qualities and speaking styles, it requires large speech corpora with targeted quality and style. Accordingly, speech conversion techniques are now of growing interest among researchers. HMM/GMM-based methods are widely used, but entail several major problems when viewed from the prosody perspective; prosodic features cover a wider time span than segmental features and their frame-by-frame processing is not always appropriate. The book offers a good overview of state-of-the-art studies on prosody in speech synthesis.

The reconstruction of the prosody of a dead language is, on the face of it, an almost impossible undertaking. However, once a general theory of prosody has been developed from eliable data in living languages, it is possible to exploit texts as sources of answers to questions that would normally be answered in the laboratory. In this work, the authors interpret the evidence of Greek verse texts and musical settings in the framework of a theory of prosody based on crosslinguistic evidence and experimental phonetic and psycholinguistic data, and reconstruct the syllable structure, rhythm, accent, phrasing, and intonation of classical Greek speech.
