Le droit des régimes matrimoniaux a traditionnellement pour objet l'ensemble des rapports pécuniaires des gens mariés, d'où le mot : matrimonial. Il est aux biens des intéressés ce que le droit du mariage est à leur statut personnel. Les régimes matrimoniaux sont divers et supplétifs : un choix est laissé aux futurs époux entre la communauté, comportant des variantes, la séparation des biens et la participation aux acquêts ; à défaut de choix exprimé, s'applique le régime légal de la communauté réduite aux acquêts ; en cours d'union, un changement de régime est possible sous certaines conditions. A tous, la loi impose cependant un ensemble de règles essentielles - de coopération, d'autonomie et de crise - formant le régime dit "primaire". L'exposé des règles communes (régime primaire, conventions matrimoniales, changement de régime) est suivi de l'étude des deux familles de régimes, communautaires et séparatistes. Bien que l'adjectif matrimonial ne leur convienne plus, faute de mariage, le régime des couples non mariés vivant en concubinage ou liés par un pacte civil de solidarité (PACS) a appelé, réforme après réforme, un aménagement comparable de régimes patrimoniaux étudié à la fin du Précis.
