A partir de 20 mètres d'ouverture, les épaisseurs données par la formule (10) sont les plus faibles et il importe d'en justifier les chiffres par des exemples tirés des constructions précédentes. Ces exemples seront pris, non dans les voûtes en plein cintre, auxquelles, d'après d'anciens usages, on a été généra lement porté à donner de fortes épaisseurs, mais dans les voûtes en arc de cercle, pour lesquelles les constructeurs ont presque toujours montré beaucoup plus de hardiesse. Or il est évident que si, dans un arc de cercle existant, une certaine épaisseur suffit pour une certaine poussée, il serait tout à fait inutile de donner une plus grande épaisseur à un plein cintre qui présenterait la méme poussée que l'arc de cercle.
