The European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms in Central and Eastern Europe
Author: Leonard M. Hammer
Publisher: Eleven International Publishing
ISBN: 9789490947064
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
From a variety of perspectives, much has been written about the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the case law of the Court of Human Rights, and yet there seems to be a gap in the literature when it comes to the impact of the Convention in different countries, and on the question of why this impact may differ from one country to another. This book fills the gap with regard to the new Member countries of the Council of Europe (CoE) in Central and Eastern Europe, by way of a comprehensive analysis that provides truly comparable information from nearly all countries in the region. Country reports are included from all ten Central and Eastern European countries that have already joined the EU, as well as most of the other countries in the region that have joined the CoE and have ratified the ECHR after the end of communist party dictatorship. A couple of reports regarding countries that have also emerged from communism, but are not eligible for membership in the CoE, are also included for comparative purposes.

Human Rights in Europe
Author: Malte Brosig
Publisher: Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 340
Book Description
The book represents an insight into current human rights developments in Europe and gives an overview of the complex, juridical and political dimensions. The contemporary development and institutionalisation of European human rights norms takes place within the structures of the European Union, OSCE, Council of Europe and a multilayered court system. Chapter II «European Organisations and Human Rights» delivers an up to date introduction into the organisation's different approaches to human rights. Geographically the volume has a strong focus on human rights developments in Central Eastern and South Eastern Europe. Russia and Turkey are challenging cases for European human rights organisations and are dealt with in separate articles. The issue of minority rights protection forms another challenge for many Central and Eastern European Countries. The protection of Roma people is only one pressing example. Finally the book devotes a whole chapter to the EU's external relations and human rights. The volume closes with a chapter written by David Chandler who reminds us of the limits of the human rights conception.
