Book Description
Excerpt from Cost Accounting in Shipbuilding In the preliminary statement on uniform cost meth ods for shipbuilders which was submitted on November 1, 1918, through the courtesy of the Emergency Fleet Corporation, there is included an outline of the needs and advantages Of uniform cost methods in the ship building industry. These benefits have been considered in the development of the principles and methods which are set up in this report. Shipbuilders and business men in general fully recog nize the value of accurate cost statistics as a means Of establishing standards for estimating and for comparing operating efficiencies, and for providing proper bases Of production costs and selling prices. The need for and advantages of uniform cost methods in the shipbuilding industry are intensified when the va ried activities and output Of shipyards and the possibili ties for incomplete figuring Of costs and losses in pro duction are considered. While it is possible, it is not essential for purposes Of comparison for the uniform cost methods to furnish scientifically accurate figures. The main Obj ect and the important advantage Of the use Of uniform methods is that all costs will be included and figured in the same way. Book Description
Excerpt from Engineering Estimates and Cost Accounts The difficulties I have endeavoured to grapple with, in both estimates and cost accounts, are such as I have met in actual practice, and such as must frequently present themselves to the staff of an engineering establishment. I cannot too strongly express my conviction that no method of estimating or costing will be satisfactory, unless the cost clerk possesses the most intimate knowledge of the business, and is sufficiently skilful and independent in practice to vary his forms of account to the difficulties which may from time to time arise. Uniformity of principle must certainly be maintained, but this does not justify pettifogging uniformity of detail. Book Description
Excerpt from Bookkeeping and Cost Accounting for Factories The author of this treatise was a bookkeeper and cost accountant for some years before he became an engineer, and many times during his career as an engineer and as manager of works he had occasion to install systems of bookkeeping and cost accounting and to audit books. In this way, and by reading much of the extensive literature on accounting, he has kept in touch for over forty years with the development of accounting practice. More than twenty years ago he was urged by the president of one of the largest manufacturing corporations in New England to write a book on factory cost accounting, but he was then too busy with other matters and the suggested book had to be postponed to the indefinite future. Some three years ago the suggestion was repeated at a conference of several professional accountants, who agreed that the literature on cost accounting was in a most chaotic shape and was altogether unsatisfactory. Book Description
Excerpt from Cost Accounts The fact that the main distinction between the accounting for trading and manufacturing concerns is the difference in nature of the transactions recorded rather than a variance in the accounting principles involved is important, because it ana bles the cost accountant, who has become confused in.the cost details, to recover his grasp on these details by resorting to the journalization of the 'transactions. Book Description
Excerpt from Estimating the Cost of Work: With Special Reference to Unstandardized Operations, as in Jobbing Shops or Repair Work This incomplete discussion upon the systematic collection and use of unit costs for ordinary estimating purposes has been compiled partly from memoranda issued from time to time within the past four years by the author to the members of the hull Estimating and Planning Staff at certain Navy Yards, as a part of their instruction and training. On account of the satisfactory results obtained by the use of these notes, incomplete as they are, I have been persuaded rather than to wait several years longer for more complete data from which to prepare a scientific discussion of the problems of the average estimator, to venture at this time to contribute my mite to the cause of standardization of labor. I do this in the belief that my efforts will be supported and far surpassed by many others of kindred faith, and that at some distant day the art of Estimating the Cost of all classes of work will approach becoming a science.
