Book Description
In Corrupting Youth, Peter Euben explores the affinities between Socratic philosophy and Athenian democratic culture as a way to think about issues of politics and education, both ancient and modern. The book moves skillfully between antiquity and the present, from ancient to contemporary political theory, and from Athenian to American democracy. It draws together important recent work by political theorists with the views of classical scholars in ways that shine new light on significant theoretical debates such as those over discourse ethics, rational choice, and political realism, and on political issues such as school vouchers and education reform. Euben not only argues for the generative capacity of classical texts and Athenian political thought, he demonstrates it by thinking with them to provide a framework for reflecting more deeply about socially divisive issues such as the war over the canon and the "politicization" of the university. Drawing on Aristophanes' Clouds, Sophocles' Antigone and Oedipus Tyrannos, and Plato's Apology of Socrates, Gorgias, and Protagoras, Euben develops a view of democratic political education. Arguing that Athenian democratic practices constituted a tradition of accountability and self-critique that Socrates expanded into a way of doing philosophy, Euben suggests a necessary reciprocity between political philosophy and radical democracy. By asking whether we can or should take "Socrates" out of the academy and put him back in front of a wider audience, Euben argues for anchoring contemporary higher education in appreciative yet skeptical encounter with the dramatic figure in Plato's dialogues.

School Corruption
Author: Armand Fusco
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 0595365574
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 372
Book Description
School Corruption: Betrayal of Children and the Public Trust is an exposé of corruption in public schools and related agencies. It shatters the complacency and silence of the pervasive corruption found in school districts throughout the Nation. Dr. Armand A. Fusco provides a detailed look at the rationale for the three levels of corrupt acts: cheating and deceit, waste and mismanagement, and fraud and stealing. Find out how and where shameful and deplorable corrupt acts have been committed in each state and school district as Fusco delves into some tough questions: Why does corruption and 'political correctness" lead to poor student achievement, disgraceful school outcomes, and failing schools? How does inept school governance allow corruption to flourish with such ease? What is the most important question that is never asked of an applicant for superintendent of schools? The harsh reality is that corruption has become a natural part of the educational landscape, but it's hidden from view by walls of denial and self-protection. Only by accepting the challenge of a new beginning can trust be restored so that the devastating impact of corrupt acts on the education of children, and the violation of the public trust, will become a thing of the past.

The Black Child-Savers
Author: Geoff K. Ward
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226873196
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 346
Book Description
During the Progressive Era, a rehabilitative agenda took hold of American juvenile justice, materializing as a citizen-and-state-building project and mirroring the unequal racial politics of American democracy itself. Alongside this liberal "manufactory of citizens,” a parallel structure was enacted: a Jim Crow juvenile justice system that endured across the nation for most of the twentieth century. In The Black Child Savers, the first study of the rise and fall of Jim Crow juvenile justice, Geoff Ward examines the origins and organization of this separate and unequal juvenile justice system. Ward explores how generations of “black child-savers” mobilized to challenge the threat to black youth and community interests and how this struggle grew aligned with a wider civil rights movement, eventually forcing the formal integration of American juvenile justice. Ward’s book reveals nearly a century of struggle to build a more democratic model of juvenile justice—an effort that succeeded in part, but ultimately failed to deliver black youth and community to liberal rehabilitative ideals. At once an inspiring story about the shifting boundaries of race, citizenship, and democracy in America and a crucial look at the nature of racial inequality, The Black Child Savers is a stirring account of the stakes and meaning of social justice.

Front Row Seat

Languages : en
Pages : 424
Book Description
A portion of the proceeds from Front Row Seat will be donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Disease research and the Positive Coaching Alliance to help coaches lead and develop America's future leaders..America's youth sports industry has changed dramatically over the past two decades. The days of playing for your town or local YMCA team, be it baseball, soccer, basketball or lacrosse were coming to an end. There would soon be an arms race - how do I get my child on the best travel team, should I hire a personal trainer, which college showcases should my child attend, should I subscribe to a recruiting service, and so on. Youth sports had become big business. An opportunity presented itself to me to invest in a sports event business and, soon, other opportunities followed. Over the next five years or so, I was invested; personally and financially in the industry. My view and approach to the youth sports market was pretty simple - first and foremost, exceed customer expectations; deliver great experiences and value; and reinforce positive values and sportsmanship. With the advent of social media, our customers became our marketers; moms, dads and kids sharing our branded content on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, respectively. The founder of a youth sports company reached out to me and told me that he had heard good things about me and said he would like to get together and tell me more about his company. He seemed to know a fair amount about my investments and activities in the sports space. He was a bit vague about why he was contacting me, however, it felt like a good networking opportunity and you never know where meetings like this can lead. I had strong opinions about the youth sports market and a fully developed investment thesis - I was confident that there was tremendous opportunity both from an investment perspective and to provide customers with better-quality experiences. Perhaps this company would prove to be a good opportunity, a platform to execute the strategy. I agreed to meet with him. I could never have imagined what the next two years of my life would be like. I quickly found myself wrapped in a web of lies, cover-ups, and dealing with individuals driven by ego and greed. Never in my life did I think I would be dealing with an international criminal investigation led by the U.S. Department of Justice. I was fearing for my family's safety and fighting for the rights of our employees and customers all at the same time. If that wasn't enough, I was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease.I had a front row seat to dozens of real-time business case studies; accounting issues; civil and criminal litigation; and my own path to acceptance and rediscovering what matters most.
