Investigation of the Echoes in the Auditorium of the University of Illinois
Author: Otto Stuhlmann Jr
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780266779216
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 58
Book Description
Excerpt from Investigation of the Echoes in the Auditorium of the University of Illinois: Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Physics in the Graduate School of the University of Illinois, 1909 He was the first to show that an echo was heard when the refleeting surface was outside of the limit OF perceptibility in terms of space. The limit of perceptibility may be defined as the shortest time that can elapse between two successive sounds, so that the ear detects no overlapping of the pulses. In his experiments on this subject he used a wall as a reflector and found that the limit of the distance was 30 feet, varying slightly, perhaps, with the intensity of the sound and the acuteness of different ears. This will give about the size teenth part of a second as the limit of time necessary for the ear to separately distinguish two similar sounds. From this experiment we learn that the reflected sounds may tend to strengthen the impression, or to confuse it, according as the difference of time between the two impressions is greater or less than the limit of perceptibility. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy.
