Book Description
Dwindling global supplies of conventional energy and materials resources are widely thought to severely constrain, or even render impossible, a "first-world" lifestyle for the bulk of Earth’s inhabitants. This bleak prospect, however, is wrong. Current energy resources are used grotesquely inefficiently as heat ("fuels," after all, are "burned"), so that well over half of the energy is simply dissipated into the environment. In turn, conventional materials resources, particularly of metals, are geologically anomalous deposits that also are typically processed by the prodigious application of raw heat. Simultaneously, rising levels of pollution worldwide are a challenge to remediate as they require the extraction of pollutants at low concentration. Nanotechnology, the structuring of matter at near-molecular scales, offers the prospect of solving all these problems at a stroke. Non-thermal use of energy, in broad emulation of what organisms do already, will not only lead to more efficient use but make practical diffuse sources such as sunlight. Pollution control and resource extraction become two aspects of the same fundamental problem, the low-energy extraction of particular substances from an arbitrary background of other substances, and this also is in emulation of what biosystems carry out already. This book sketches out approaches both for the efficient, non-thermal use of energy and the molecular extraction of solutes, primarily from aqueous solution, for purification, pollution control, and resource extraction. Some long-term implications for resource demand are also noted. In particular, defect-free fabrication at the molecular level is ultimately likely to make structural metals obsolete.

Book Description
In engineering, there are often situations in which the material of the main component is unable to sustain long life or protect itself from adverse operating environments. Moreover, in some cases, different material properties such as anti-friction and wear, anti-corrosive, thermal resistive, super hydrophobic, etc. are required as per the operating conditions. If those bulk components are made of such materials and possess those properties, the cost will be very high. In such cases, a practical solution is surface coating, which serves as a protective barrier to the bulk material from the adverse environment. In the last decade, with enormous effort, researchers and scientists have developed suitable materials to overcome those unfavorable operating conditions, and they have used advanced deposition techniques to enhance the adhesion and surface texturing of the coatings. Advanced Surface Coating Techniques for Modern Industrial Applications is a highly sought reference source that compiles the recent research trends in these new and emerging surface coating materials, deposition techniques, properties of coated materials, and their applications in various engineering and industrial fields. The book particularly focuses on 1) coating materials including anti-corrosive materials and nanomaterials, 2) coating methods including thermal spray and electroless disposition, and 3) applications such as surface engineering and thin film application. The book is ideal for engineers, scientists, researchers, academicians, and students working in fields like material science, mechanical engineering, tribology, chemical and corrosion science, bio-medical engineering, biomaterials, and aerospace engineering.

Book Description
Intended to update scientists and engineers on the current state of the art in a variety of key techniques used extensively in the fabrication of structures at the nanoscale. The present work covers the essential technologies for creating sub 25 nm features lithographically, depositing layers with nanometer control, and etching patterns and structures at the nanoscale. A distinguishing feature of this book is a focus not on extension of microelectronics fabrication, but rather on techniques applicable for building NEMS, biosensors, nanomaterials, photonic crystals, and other novel devices and structures that will revolutionize society in the coming years.

Book Description
The book is a collection of the author’s years of experience and research findings, as well as the latest development, in micro-nanofabrication technologies. It gives a detailed introduction on the basics of micro-nanofabrication, including optical lithography, electron beam lithography, focused ion beam technique, X-ray lithography, various etching and replication techniques. For each of the fabrication technology it introduces, the emphasis is on clear explanation of the basic principle, the essential steps in the processes, various process conditions and typical process parameters. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique are also analysed. The applications of micro-nanofabrication technologies focus on manufacturing of very large scale integrated circuits (VLSI), nanoelectronics, optoelectronics, high density magnetic storage, micro-electro-mechanical system or MEMS, biochip or lab-on-chip and nanotechnology. Each of the applications is accompanied by practical examples to demonstrate how particular fabrication techniques are applied. There is an extensive list of references following each chapter for readers to explore further. The book is not only a good supplementary reading material for university undergraduates or postgraduates who are novices in this field, but also a good reference book for experienced engineering professionals who wish to know other fabrication techniques outside their own field.
