The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between race-related stress and coping strategies, and to examine the influence that parenting style has on coping with race-related stress specifically elicited by racial microaggressions. Literature suggests that parenting style influences various aspects of behavior throughout one's lifetime, including coping tendencies. However, there is a dearth of research which examines how parenting styles (Baumrind, 1966, 1971; Maccoby & Martin, 1983) moderate coping strategies that racial/ethnic minorities use to cope with race-related stress induced by racial microaggressions, a contemporary, prevalent, and chronic form of racism. This study addresses this gap in research by studying how parenting style effects coping strategies used by adults (N=263) for race-related stress related to racial microaggressions. The study consisted of self-report data collected from an online survey. Most participants were undergraduate students recruited through a University research pool. Regression analyses indicated that authoritative parenting moderated the relationship between race-related stress and coping with discrimination. Implications of these findings and directions for future research are discussed.

"Racial microaggressions are commonplace, brief, subtle denigrating messages targeted at people of colour because they belong to a racial minority group (Pierce, Carew, & Pierce-Gonzalez, 1978; Solórzano, Ceja, & Yosso, 2000; Sue, 2010; Sue, Capodilupo et al., 2007). Because of their subtle and nebulous nature, these incidents may require complex coping strategies (Lewis et al., 2013; Noh, Kaspar, & Wickrama, 2007; Pierce, 1995). In this dissertation, I examined responses among racialized university students and community members in Montreal, Canada. Research questions were as following: (a) how do individuals who experience racial microaggressions respond to or cope with racial microaggressions?; (b) what effects, if any, do intersecting social group identities (e.g., race, ethnicity, gender, and social class) have on individuals' responses to racial microaggressions?This dissertation comprises two studies. In study one, I conducted focus groups with five groups of students (i.e., East Asian, South Asian, Black, and Arab Canadians and Aboriginal students; n = 32) at a predominantly White Canadian university. To analyze the data, I used the consensual qualitative research approach (CQR; Hill et al., 1997, 2005) that has been utilized often in microaggression research (e.g., Sue, Capodilupo et al., 2007, 2008). In study two, I conducted individual interviews with Black Canadian (n = 5) and Indigenous (n = 5) community members who pursued employment directly following secondary education. I utilized interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA; Smith, Flowers, & Larkin, 2009), a complementary qualitative approach to augment my earlier investigation. Across both the student and community samples, findings demonstrated that participants used a range of collective, protective, and resistant strategies in response to experiences with racial microaggressions. At times, participants' strategies differed based on intersecting social group identities. Response strategies convey three important features: (a) the influence of racial/ethnic identity in the use of resistance; (b) deliberate strategies of disengagement as a form of resistance; and, (c) participants' use of humour to serve different functions depending on the context. Finally, I offered directions for future research, re-conceptualization of responses to racial microaggressions, and practice. " --

The negative ramifications of racial microaggressions are a burgeoning area of empirical inquiry; however, there is a paucity of research that examines how Latinas/os experience and cope with racial microaggresions. Thus, this qualitative study explored the emotional consequences of exposure to racial microaggressions and coping skills utilized to combat these discriminatory experiences. Seventeen participants who were attending a Hispanic Serving Institution in the Southwest were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. A constructivism grounded theory approach informed the conceptualization, execution and analysis of this study. Emerging themes based on participant responses included: Societal and Cultural Factors that Influence Discrimination Against Latina/os, Perception of Campus Racial Climate, Experience of Racial Microaggressions, Appraisal of Microaggressions, Emotional Reactions to Racial Microaggressions, Coping with Racial Microaggressions, and Recommendations for Creating a Safer Racial Climate for Latina/os. A theory was proposed that explained how Latina/o students cope with racial discrimination/racial microaggressions at a Hispanic Serving Institution. The results are discussed using a Critical Race Theory lens. Implications and future directions are presented.

Recently, researchers have investigated how racial identity status attitudes may influence the relationship between experiencing racism and affective responses (i.e., it has been suggested that racial identity may act as a buffer against experiencing negative affect as a consequence of exposure to racial discrimination). While this question has received increased attention in recent years, this literature has not extensively examined this association with more current and refined conceptualizations of subtle discrimination (i.e., microaggressions) and racial ideology. Additionally, the impact of racial coping styles on this association has not yet been examined. As such, the purpose of this study was to examine whether endorsement of racial identity and color-blind attitudes might both moderate the relationship between experiencing modern racism (quantified using the Racial and Ethnic Microaggressions Scale) and psychological distress. A secondary goal of this study was to determine the potential impact of racial coping styles on the aforementioned relationship. Utilizing a sample of 218 Black college students, this study found that the association between experiencing racial microaggressions and endorsing symptoms of psychological distress was moderated by color-blind racial attitudes. This study also found that anger regulation coping partially mediated the relationship between racial microaggression scores and psychological distress. Further, this study found no support for the hypothesis that racial identity attitudes and color-blind racial attitudes would additively moderate the association between experiencing racial microaggressions and endorsing symptoms of psychological distress.
