More than half of the 25.9 million refugees in the world are under the age of 18 and the mental health of these children and adolescents constitutes a growing global public health priority. Refugee children and their families are at increased risk to develop mental health problems, but they often face major challenges in accessing adequate treatment and mental health professionals frequently feel ill-equipped to assist this group. Refugees are faced with a plethora of issues including the ambiguous loss of loved ones, psychological trauma related to past experiences of violence and atrocities, the complexities of daily life as a refugee, and the challenges to adapt to new systems of care and support. Refugees’ life circumstances all too often undermine their agency, asthey face discrimination, stigma, and social isolation or exclusion. Refugees are frequently disconnected from the usual family and community supports that they once had, which creates additional mental distress. As parents struggle with these changes, their children often find it even more difficult to adapt and connect with them. This all leads to increased prevalence of mental health conditions among refugees. Humanitarian policies recommend family-centered interventions that are multi-sectoral,multi-disciplinary, and focus on optimizing resource utilization. Over the last decade, a considerable body of research has emerged around socio-ecological models of mental health, family and community approaches, and resilience and strengths-based theories, but these insights are insufficiently incorporated in the practice of mental health care for refugee children. Clinicians often struggle to grasp the common unique stressors that families face and are not familiar with working with families as units for intervention. Using culturally and contextually informed assessment methods and family-oriented management approaches not only help individual children or adolescents, but also their families. This book aims to provide an overview of the latest theoretical insights from research on sociocultural aspects of mental health and connect these with clinical insights from practical mental health care provision. Using strengths-based, resiliency-oriented and family-centered approaches can enrich clinical practice in refugee mental health, but clinicians need to translate the emerging evidence into concrete steps and interventions. This requires additional skills for the assessment and management of mental health conditions in refugee children and families. The chapters in this book are written by a diverse group of authors using global, multi-disciplinary approaches. The chapters provide examples from various contexts including refugees who are displaced to neighboring countries, refugees ‘on the move’, and refugees and asylum seekers in resettlement settings. This book is therefore a unique resource for clinicians, researchers and policy makers working on mental health issues of refugee children and adolescents around the world.

Much of the literature on refugee youths’ mental health has focused on psychological distress, leaving a gap in our understanding of what contributes to psychological well-being among this population. To address this gap, this mixed methods study employed a resilience framework to explore the links between exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs), daily stressors, coping flexibility, well-being, and psychological distress among Syrian refugee adolescents living in Jordan. The qualitative section of this study included eleven individual interviews and one focus group with three adolescents. The study used constructivist-interpretivist grounded theory and the critical incident technique, to identify stressors, coping strategies, coping flexibility, and resilience processes among Syrian refugee youth. Stressors reported by youth, included separation from family and friends, access to basic needs, and discrimination and systemic oppression. Coping strategies used by youth, included spending time with family and friends, getting emotional support, distraction, and spending time alone. Coping flexibility emerged as a developmental process that aided resilience and helped youth cope with discrimination. Finally, key resilience processes that emerged, included education, independence, and hopes for the future. The quantitative section of this study included one hundred and thirteen youth. An exploratory factor analysis with the Kidcope scale revealed two factors (positive and negative coping strategies). Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to analyze two models; one model included psychological distress as an outcome and one model included well-being as an outcome. Mediation models were run to examine relationships between PTEs, daily stressors, coping flexibility, and mental health outcomes. Results demonstrated that daily stressors fully mediated the relationship between PTEs and distress and were associated with negative coping techniques. Daily stressors did not mediate the relationship between PTEs and well-being. Coping flexibility did not mediate PTEs and mental health outcomes, however, negative coping strategies were associated with distress and positive coping strategies were associated with well-being. The findings from the current study highlight unique resilience processes and coping mechanisms used by Syrian refugee youth and demonstrate the need to develop interventions that are culturally- and contextually-grounded. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed

The conflict in Syria has created a humanitarian crisis, with almost two million people having fled to neighbouring countries in the hope of escaping the violence. Thousands of Syrian refugees continue to enter Lebanon each week, putting increasing pressure on the ability of host communities and aid agencies to provide them with support. The situation has created intense levels of stress for refugees, as in many cases they are forced to take on new responsibilities at odds with their traditional gendered social roles. In order to understand these changing roles, Oxfam and the ABAAD - Resource Centre for Gender Equality conducted a gender situation and vulnerability assessment among Syrian refugees and Palestinian refugees from Syria now living in Lebanon. The findings are presented in this report, which aims to contribute to an improved understanding of the gendered impact of the Syrian conflict and subsequent displacement on refugees now in Lebanon. The report concludes with detailed recommendations for development and humanitarian practitioners and donor agencies, to help them design and implement gender-sensitive programming that addresses these shifting gender roles and helps to minimize stress and tensions among refugee populations (at individual, household and community levels) and between refugee and host communities.

This study outlines an art therapy intervention designed to enhance coping skills of refugee adolescents and strengthen family bonds. The complexity of the refugee predicament is outlined and current trends in refugee mental health treatment are surveyed. The structure of Heartland Health Outreach's International FACES program, as well as the school and home environment of participating youths is detailed. The specific 12 session intervention outlined in this paper is aimed at helping adolescents negotiate the process of acculturation to life in the United States by providing adjunctive art therapy sessions to refugee adolescents participating in their school's Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) program. Alternating between individual and family art therapy sessions, this intervention enables youth to process the CBITS curriculum as well as their experiences and relationships in the United States while encouraging the creation of a family narrative through various art therapy directives. Suggestions for method implementation and further study are discussed.
