Book Description
Cooperative relaying is a promising approach to improve data rate and coverage in wireless networks. Although the benefits of cooperation have been consistently shown in theory, the performance of realistic cooperative networks is still not clear. Bridging this gap between theory and practice is the objective of this thesis. This is done in three steps. First, practical selection relaying protocols are analyzed under realistic assumptions. Second, efficient protocol extensions are described and, third, a prototype for cooperative Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) is demonstrated. Based on theoretical findings and extensive field measurements, this thesis provides insight into the performance regions of realistic cooperative networks and into implementing cooperative devices. Furthermore, the basic elements of cooperative systems are introduced and a concise taxonomy of common designs is given. This text is, thus, helpful for researchers and engineers who implement cooperative systems, plan to support their networks by relaying, or look for an introduction in the field.

Book Description
In this thesis, several important aspects of cooperative wireless multiuser networks are investigated. The focus lies on coherent two-hop relaying networks where several amplify-and-forward (AF) relays assist the communication between multiple source-destination pairs. First, the impact of local oscillator (LO) imperfections and I/Q imbalance at the relays on two-hop relaying is investigated. A special focus lies on the comparison between frequency division duplexing (FDD) and time division duplexing (TDD) relays. Based on the observation that the direction in which a channel between two wireless nodes is measured has an impact on the estimate, phase synchronization requirements for coherent relaying networks are then found. Several channel estimation protocols that differ in the direction in which the single-hop channels are measured are furthermore identi'ed and their performance is compared. Next, a very simple phase synchronization scheme is presented that provides a set of relays with a common LO phase. Two coherent beamforming schemes, namely multiuser zero-forcing (MUZF) and multiuser minimum mean squared error (MMSE) relaying, are then investigated. Finally, a real-world demonstrator for distributed wireless communication networks (called RACooN Lab) is presented. It was used to implement coherent cooperative communication schemes on a practical two-hop relaying network.

Book Description
In this thesis we have compared the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of Amplify and Forward (AF), Ideal Decode and Forward (DF) cooperative communication system with conventional system where no cooperation is used. The BER performance of AF, ideal DF cooperative system and conventional system with no cooperation using BPSK is plotted against P/No. An interesting observed made is that both AF and ideal DF cooperative system are comparable in performance when the relay is selected at a faster rate and the channel is estimated at a faster rate for a wider range of P/No values. However, the ideal DF cooperative system shows better BER performance than AF cooperative system when the relay is selected at a slower rate and channel is estimated at a slower rate. At a faster relay selection and channel estimation rate AF cooperative system is better than ideal DF cooperative system since BER performance is comparable and complexity of AF is much less than DF cooperative system.^One disadvantage of increasing the relay selection and channel estimation rate is that the overhead time used to select the relay increases and the throughput efficiency is reduced. It can be concluded that for a system using AF there is a tradeoff between the BER performance and throughput efficiency. The second interesting observation is that when the relay is selected and channel is estimated at a much slower rate BER performance of both AF and ideal DF cooperative system saturates for higher values of P/No. No improvement in BER performance of both AF and ideal DF cooperative system with increase in P/No was observed for slower relay selection and channel estimation rate after a certain value of P/No. We have also proposed a relay selection protocol for cooperative systems using AF cooperation protocol. The proposed relay selection protocol in this thesis has some advantages over the existing protocols proposed for cellular communication.^In our protocol the relay selection is always done at the Base Station for both Uplink and Downlink transmission. This allows us to have a system in which the hardware and software needed for relay selection to be present only at the base station. Also the cooperation threshold value need not be known to all the mobile phones in the cellular network since only the Base Station will use it.

Book Description
This book presents physical-layer security as a promising paradigm for achieving the information-theoretic secrecy required for wireless networks. It explains how wireless networks are extremely vulnerable to eavesdropping attacks and discusses a range of security techniques including information-theoretic security, artificial noise aided security, security-oriented beamforming, and diversity assisted security approaches. It also provides an overview of the cooperative relaying methods for wireless networks such as orthogonal relaying, non-orthogonal relaying, and relay selection.Chapters explore the relay-selection designs for improving wireless secrecy against eavesdropping in time-varying fading environments and a joint relay and jammer selection for wireless physical-layer security, where a relay is used to assist the transmission from the source to destination and a friendly jammer is employed to transmit an artificial noise for confusing the eavesdropper. Additionally, the security-reliability tradeoff (SRT) is mathematically characterized for wireless communications and two main relay-selection schemes, the single-relay and multi-relay selection, are devised for the wireless SRT improvement. In the single-relay selection, only the single best relay is chosen for assisting the wireless transmission, while the multi-relay selection invokes multiple relays for simultaneously forwarding the source transmission to the destination.Physical-Layer Security for Cooperative Relay Networks is designed for researchers and professionals working with networking or wireless security. Advanced-level students interested in networks, wireless, or privacy will also find this book a useful resource.

Book Description
Cooperative and relay communications have recently become the most widely explored topics in communications, whereby users cooperate in transmitting their messages to the destination, instead of conventional networks which operate independently and compete among each other for channel resources. As the field has progressed, cooperative communications have become a design concept rather than a specific transmission technology. This concept has revolutionized the design of wireless networks, allowing increased coverage, throughput, and transmission reliability even as conventional transmission techniques gradually reach their limits. Cooperative and relay technologies have also made their way toward next generation wireless standards, such as IEEE802.16 (WiMAX) or LTE, and have been incorporated into many modern wireless applications, such as cognitive radio and secret communications. Cooperative Communications and Networking: Technologies and System Design provides a systematic introduction to the fundamental concepts of cooperative communications and relays technology to enable engineers, researchers or graduate students to conduct advanced research and development in this area. Cooperative Communications and Networking: Technologies and System Design provides researchers, graduate students, and practical engineers with sufficient knowledge of both the background of cooperative communications and networking, and potential research directions.
