Book Description
Until about 60 years ago, linguistic research on the Arabic language in the West was restricted to inquiries on Classical Arabic and the Classical tradition, and spoken Arabic dialects, with historical studies embedded within the broader field of Semitic languages. This situation is changing quickly, not only through the continuation of older research traditions, but also with the integration of new research fields and perspectives. With this expansion comes the danger of specialists in Arabic losing an overview of the field, and of leaving non-specialists without basic resources for evaluating domains of research which they may be interested in for comparative purposes. The Oxford Handbook of Arabic Linguistics will confront this problem by combining state-of-the-art overviews with essays on issues of perspective, controversy, and point of view. In twenty-four chapters, leading experts from around the world will lay out their own stances on controversial issues. The book not only evaluates ways in which questions and theories established in general linguistics and its sub-fields elucidate Arabic, but also challenges approaches which might result in accommodating Arabic to "non-Arabic" interpretations, and brings out the Arabic specificity of individual problems. The Handbook, in one compact volume, gives critical expression to a language which covers large populations and geographical areas, has a long written tradition, and has been the locus of major intellectual fervor and debate.

Book Description
DANS CE TRAVAIL, NOUS ETUDIONS CERTAINES CONSONNES DE L'ARABE STANDARD MODERNE, A SAVOIR LES CONSONNES UVULAIRES, LES PHARYNGALES ET LES PHARYNGALISEES. L'ETUDE DE CES CONSONNES EST FAITE DE PLUSIEURS POINTS DE VUE : MODELISATION ACOUSTIQUE, ANALYSE SPECTROGRAPHIQUE, ANALYSE SPECTRALE, ANALYSE PERCEPTIVE, MESURE AERODYNAMIQUE ET LARYNGOGRAPHIQUE. DANS LE PREMIER CHAPITRE, ON PROPOSE DES FONCTIONS D'AIRE SIMPLES QUI SONT BASEES SUR DES FONCTIONS D'AIRE DERIVEES DE COUPES SAGITTALES DU CONDUIT VOCAL. LA SYNTHESE DE PAROLE A PARTIR DE CES MODELES EST AUSSI PROPOSEE. LES VALEURS FORMANTIQUES CALCULEES A PARTIR DE CES MODELES CORRESPONDENT BIEN A CELLES MESUREES DANS LA PAROLE NATURELLE. LA MODELISATION NOUS A PERMIS DE CONSIDERER CES CONSONNES COMME ETANT DES APPROXIMATIVES MAIS NON DES FRICATIVES. L'ANALYSE AERODYNAMIQUE (2EME CH.) CONFIRME CETTE CONSTATATION. LES VALEURS DE DEBIT D'AIR SONT AU DESSUS DE LA NORME POUR LES FRICATIVES. DE PLUS, LEUR FORME DE DEBIT PRESENTE UN SEUL PIC, ALORS QUE CELUI DES FRICATIVES PRESENTE DEUX PICS. LE TROISIEME CHAPITRE SUR LES EQUATIONS DE LOCUS A MONTRE QUE CELLES-CI SONT CAPABLES DE DISTINGUER LES CONSONNES NON-PHARYNGALISEES DES CONSONNES PHARYNGALISEES. CELLES-CI PRESENTENT LES PENTES LES PLUS APLATIES CE QUI INDIQUE QU'ELLES RESISTENT LE PLUS A LA COARTICULATION VOCALIQUE. LA CONTRAINTE SUR LE CORPS DE LA LANGUE QUI EST EN RAPPORT AVEC LA FORMATION SIMULTANEE DE DEUX LIEUS D'ARTICULATION POUR CES CONSONNES EXPLIQUE CETTE RESISTANCE. LE 4EME CHAPITRE MONTRE L'EXISTENCE D'UNE RELATION COMPENSATOIRE ENTRE LA TRANSITION DE F1 ET LA TRANSITION INITIALE DE F2 DANS LA PERCEPTION DE LA DISTINCTION ENTRE LA PHARYNGALISEE ET SA CORRESPONDANTE NON-PHARYNGALISEE.

Book Description
Linguistic variation is a topic of ongoing interest to the field. Its description and its explanations continue to intrigue scholars from many different backgrounds. By taking a deliberately broad perspective on the matter, covering not only crosslinguistic and diachronic but also intralinguistic and interspeaker variation and examining phenomena ranging from negation over connectives to definite articles in well- and lesser-known languages, the volume furthers our understanding of variation in general. The papers offer new insights into, among other things, the theoretical notion of comparative concepts, the social or mental nature of language structure, the areal factor in lexical typology and the diachronic implications of semantic maps. The collection will thus be of relevance to typologists and historical linguists, as well as to people studying variation within the areas of cognitive and functional linguistics.
