"Les surfaces carbonées présentent généralement un certain nombre de groupements superficiels qui déterminent leurs propriétés chimiques. La nature et la réactivité de ces groupements ont un rôle déterminant sur les propriétés d'adsorption et d'adhésion. Ils sont en effet responsables de l'interaction de la surface avec les gaz et les liquides. Par ailleurs ces "oxydes de surface" qui apparaissent comme des espèces intermédiaires dans le processus d'oxydation des carbones peuvent en effet présenter soit un caractère acide soit un caractère basique [...]. La nature et le mode de formation de ces oxydes de surface sont encore mal connus. Il nous a donc paru intéressant d'étudier l'acidité des groupements superficiels de manière plus directe en utilisant des réactifs gazeux. Cette méthode a l'avantage de ne présenter aucun stade intermédiaire dans les réactions, de n'utiliser aucun solvant et de rendre ainsi la surface carbonée plus facilement accessible aux molécules de réactif. L'acidité provenant certainement de fonctions de nature chimique différente, il nous a semblé intéressant d'utiliser deux bases : ammoniac et méthylamine pour atteindre des sites d'acidité différente ; des mesures calorimétriques ont également fourni des renseignements concernant le mode de fixation des molécules de réactif à la surface de l'échantillon. Nous avons aussi utilisé un hydrocarbure simple : l'éthane ; son adsorption a ainsi permis d'avaluer le rôle du groupement méthyle lors de la fixation de molécules aliphatiques sur de telles surfaces. Enfin comme tous ces groupements superficiels ont des propriétés chimiques différentes selon la température à laquelle ils se sont formés, nous avons essayé de connaître les conditions dans lesquelles il est possible de les régénérer. Pour cela nous avons étudié l'action de l'oxygène en opérant à tempérture décroissante. Des dégazages à haute température nous ont renseigné sur la stabilité thermique des sites ainsi créés. L'adsorption d'ammoniac ayant permis d'autre part d'en évaluer l'acidité."
