Cette étude est consacrée à l'interaction de la fonte liquide avec les céramiques : mouillabilité et corrosion. Les mesures de la mouillabilité ont nécessité le développement d'un appareillage permettant la détermination des paramètres de mouillages tels que l'angle de contact et la tension superficielle, sous vide ou en atmosphère contrôlée, et dans une gamme étendue de températures jusqu'à 1800°C. Le traitement d'images ainsi que les calculs numériques mis au moint permettent une mesure rapide et fiable de ces paramètres thermodynamiques. L'étude du contact de la fonte liquide avec un grand nombre de céramiques a permis de déterminer le rôle prépondérant des éléments d'ajouts présents dans l'alliage. Le rôle du magnésium sur le mouillage et sur les aspects microstructuraux de l'alliage après refroidissement a été particulièrement mis en évidence. Il a ainsi été possible de proposer un matériau composé de mullite, cordiérite et silice dont la faible interaction avec la fonte est susceptible de présenter un intérêt en tant que réfractaire dans la métallurgie de cet alliage.

The study of the human-made world, whether it is called artifacts, material culture, or technology, has burgeoned across the academy. Archaeologists have for cen- ries led the way, and today offer investigators myriad programs and conceptual frameworks for engaging the things, ordinary and extraordinary, of everyday life. This book is an attempt by practitioners of one program – Behavioral Archaeology – to furnish between two covers some of our basic principles, heuristic tools, and illustrative case studies. Our greater purpose, however, is to engage the ideas of two competing programs – agency/practice and evolution – in hopes of initiating a dialog. Pottery is the most ubiquitous find in most historical archaeological excavations and serves as the basis for much research in the discipline. But it is not only its frequency that makes it a prime dataset for such research, it is also that pottery embeds many dimensions of the human experience, ranging from the purely technical to the eminently symbolic. The aim of this book is to provide a cutting-edge theoretical and methodological framework, as well as a practical guide, for archaeologists, students and researchers to study ceramic assemblages. As opposed to the conventional typological approach, which focuses on vessel shape and assumed function with the main goal of establishing a chronological sequence, the proposed framework is based on the technological approach. Such an approach utilizes the concept of chaîne opératoire, which is geared to an anthropological interpretation of archaeological objects. The author offers a sound theoretical background accompanied by an original research strategy whose presentation is at the heart of this book. This research strategy is presented in successive chapters that are geared to explain not only how to study archaeological assemblages, but also why the proposed methods are essential for achieving ambitious interpretive goals. In the heated debate on the equation stating that “pots equal people”, which is a rather fuzzy reference to assumed relationships between (mostly) ethnic groups and pottery, technology enables us to propose with conviction the equation “pots equal potters”. In this way, a well-founded history of potters is able to achieve a much better cultural and anthropological understanding of ancient societies.
