Cette recherche se fonde sur une enquête auprès de 48 des 100 premiers groupes français. Les entretiens réalisés auprès des directeurs financiers généraux de ces entreprises, ont fait l'objet de traitements statistiques par corrélations canoniques. Au stade dénommé "émergence de la stratégie", la phase de l'information du stratège a été distinguée de celle de la formalisation des objectifs. Lors de la première phase, le financier a pour mission de renseigner les dirigeants en utilisant les données issues de la comptabilité et en collectant celles provenant de l'environnement strictement financier. La difficulté est d'envisager la finalité stratégique de ces informations tout en leur conservant rigueur et qualité. Lors de la phase de formalisation de la stratégie, le financier crédibilise les documents élaborés et relie les prévisions opérationnelles aux plans stratégiques sans altérer leurs caractères. Le second stade, "l'application de la stratégie", comprend la prise de décision et sa mise en œuvre. La décision stratégique est essentielle parce que représentant le moment où la stratégie devient irréversible. Elle peut être également influencée par le financier qui est un des principaux intervenants tant dans ses préliminaires qu'au moment ou cette décision se prend. Il doit y représenter les impératifs financiers tout en ayant une perspective élargie. Dans la mise en œuvre, la tâche du financier, par la communication aux analystes et par l'adaptation de la structure du capital aux projets envisagés, est un des facteurs-clefs de la réussite de la stratégie. Ainsi, l'incorporation d'une dimension stratégique se révèle indispensable pour une définition de la fonction financière moderne.

Cette recherche exploratoire examine la question de la décision de financement dans la petite entreprise selon une approche comportementale en s'intéressant à la manière dont les dirigeants de petite entreprise prennent la décision. Le comportement du dirigeant est examiné au moyen de l'approche théorique du choix managérial de Norton (1991), associée au modèle des proxémies financières de Torres (2011), pour formuler un modèle conceptuel théorique. L'objectif est d'examiner le processus de la décision de financement, dans l'esprit des travaux de Nussenbaum (1978) sur la décision d'investissement. La recherche empirique, de nature qualitative, est conduite au moyen d'études de cas selon un cadre épistémologique interprétativiste. Les résultats qui en découlent, indiquent l'intérêt et la pertinence de l'approche processuelle pour comprendre les comportements des dirigeants de PE. Une typologie comportementale est élaborée et permet de distinguer les dirigeants les uns des autres, selon leurs attitudes et comportements en matière de choix de financement.
