Book Description
OUR GLOBAL ECONOMIC SYSTEM, WHICH FOR MANY YEARS HAS SERVED US WELL, IS UNDER GREAT STRESS. WE LIVE AS IF RESOURCES ARE LIMITLESS, THE CLIMATE IS CONSTANT, AND THE ECONOMY WILL HAVE ETERNAL GROWTH. Today's levels of consumption are unsustainable, as is our way of investing. But by choosing the right investments for your retirement and for other savings goals, you can make more difference than by just recycling and buying organic products. The authors show that sustainable savings are among the most effective tools to combat climate change and achieve a sustainable future. In addition, such investments are profitable: companies that perform well on sustainability outperform their competitors, generate better returns, and have stronger financials. Where the Money Tree Grows is a book that gives you practical guidance on how you can use your savings to effectively contribute to a more sustainable world while making profitable investments. You'll get concrete advice on how to save sustainably, and how you can find investment opportunities linked to the greatest challenge of our time. Sasja Beslik is Managing Director, Head of Sustainable Finance Development at J. Safra Sarasin and has more than 20 years of experience in the banking industry. In 2013 he was awarded an Order of the Seraphim medal by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden for his work in the field of finance and sustainability. He is the author of the weekly newsletter ESG on a Sunday. Karim Sayyad CFA is Vice President, ESG Strategy at Credit Suisse with 10 years of financial experience and has previously worked at Nordea Asset Management with impact private equity, ESG analysis and active ownership.

Forests in Time
Author: John D. Aber
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780300115376
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 477
Book Description
The Eastern Hemlock, massive and majestic, has played a unique role in structuring northeastern forest environments, from Nova Scotia to Wisconsin and through the Appalachian Mountains to North Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama. A "foundation species" influencing all the species in the ecosystem surrounding it, this iconic North American tree has long inspired poets and artists as well as naturalists and scientists. Five thousand years ago, the hemlock collapsed as a result of abrupt global climate change. Now this iconic tree faces extinction once again because of an invasive insect, the hemlock woolly adelgid. Drawing from a century of studies at Harvard University's Harvard Forest, one of the most well-regarded long-term ecological research programs in North America, the authors explore what hemlock's modern decline can tell us about the challenges facing nature and society in an era of habitat changes and fragmentation, as well as global change.

A Twist in the Tale
Author: Mike Upton
Publisher: Author House
ISBN: 1477214569
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 376
Book Description
A TWIST IN THE TALE is a book containing four different stories - but what each story has in common is that they all have an unusual and unexpected ending. A final unforseen twist - hence the title. The first - SEA DEEP- tells the story of Pete an advertising man in London who is suddenly made redundant. Finding it difficult to get another job in the world of advertising he embarks on an adventure to fulfill an ambition which subsequently completely changes his life. The second - ILLUSION - recounts the impact on a small boy during World War Two of seeing captured Italian soldiers behind barbed wire in a prisoner of war camp built on the moors outside Sheffield and the friendship that he establishes with one of them followed by his subsequent attempt after the war to meet the man back in his home village near Milan. The third - CHOICE - again returns to the Advertising and Marketing world. As the story evolves we see how the central character Dave struggles with his conscience over the affair he is having with a work colleague, and how it affects his relationship with his wife and two children. Eventually he has to make a choice - wife or mistress? But fate has a way of interfering in his decision. The final story - GONE - deals with the issue of a businessman happily married for ten years but who one Sunday afternoon simply walks out of their farmhouse and completely disappears. Where has he gone and why? And who is the mysterious Bulgarian woman who appears on the scene and what has she got to do with the missing man? A taut "who-dun-it" which like the other stories at the end has a Twist in the Tale .
