Book Description
Excerpt from Huguenot Society of America Constitution, by Laws: As Revised January 7, 1901 The emigration of the Huguenots in the seventeenth century is one of the most important events of modern history. It largely prepared the way, a century later, for the overthrow of the old r'gime in France; it greatly enriched, morally, intellectually and materially, every country in which the exiles took refuge; and it is the true source of the liberal character which has since marked the public polity of Europe. Besides this general significance, the Huguenot emigration possessed two features which distinguished it from all similar events known in history, and which render its careful study and commemoration eminently proper and in structive. The Huguenots, in the first place, did not, like so many common adventurers, leave their country to seek fortune abroad. It was with them a question of mass or exile; and nearly a million of men, women and children, comprising the best elements of the population of France, forsook their country at the call of conscience, in order to enjoy under more liberal rulers the indisputable privilege of a free and open Bible. In the next place, the course of their emigration, which led them to wherever the principle of, religious toleration had obtained a foothold, stamped their movement with almost universal significance. Large bodies of Huguenots thus settled them selves in various parts of Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Great Britain, America, etc., and through these settlements they have shaped, directly or indirectly, the character of modern civilization to a very important extent. Strangely enough, the history of this important movement has never been adequately written. The only work which professes to speak of it in detail is that of M. Charles Weiss, which appeared in 18 53. But this history, excel lent as it is in many respects, is very deficient in life, and ought to be rewritten and completed in the light of recent researches. Unfortunately the same is true of most of the special histories which treat of the settlement of the Huguenots in the several countries of Europe, and aside from the invaluable history of the late Rev. Dr. C. W. Baird, it is not too much to say that a few hundred pages would easily comprise all that has been published of any real value on the history of the Huguenots in America. This dearth of satisfactory histories of the Huguenot emigration is no doubt due to the difficulties of the task. The subject is very extensive, and the gathering of the material is necessarily slow, arduous and expensive, and much remains to be done.
