Book Description
Until now, Prevost's critics have had to resort to philosophical or biographical reduction to explain the many anomalies and contradictions found in his works. By contrast, Lazzaro-Weis identifies the primary literary force that shapes Prevost's fiction as the romance. She traces the tradition from its beginning in the early Greek and Roman prose narratives through its permutations in selected sixteenth and seventeenth century French and Italian romances. Lazzaro-Weis then reads "Cleveland" and "Le Doyen de Killerine" in detail and shows how these works need to be read as romances if critics are to understand and appreciate the displacements and innovations Prevost effected in the form."

Book Description
Epiphanies is a philosophical exploration of epiphanies, peak experiences, 'wow moments', or ecstasies as they are sometimes called. What are epiphanies, and why do so many people so frequently experience them? Are they just transient phenomena in our brains, or are they the revelations of objective value that they very often seem to be? What do they tell us about the world, and about ourselves? How, if at all, do epiphanies fit in with our moral systems and our theories of how to live? And how do epiphanic experiences fit in with the rest of our lives? These are Sophie Grace Chappell's questions in this ground-breaking new study of an area of inquiry that has always been right under our noses, but remains surprisingly under-explored in contemporary philosophy.

Book Description
'What I remember was that it was the first time a piece of fiction had had such a devastating emotional effect on me. A lot of children remember seeing cartoons, Pinocchio or Bambi or something that breaks their heart. I remember seeing The Blue Angel and it breaking my heart. It was the first time I realised there was an adult world - that adults could damage each other or destroy each other emotionally. It might have fed into a whole series of epiphanies about my own upbringing. I was living in a family where my grandparents had separated in quite complex circumstances. Perhaps it resonated with some elements of that, to do with simply how love can be a rupturing and damaging emotion as well as a healing one. Also, to see somebody who is in an authority position made so small, so diminished, by the feeling of having no control.' Anthony Minghella / The Blue Angel 'In a strange, lethal way, I was suddenly wildly attracted to the process of filmmaking, even though it is described as a nightmare - a matter of horror - in that film. There is a trancelike atmosphere. Suddenly, I was reminded that you can feel like it's a matter of life and death when you make a film. It changed from being a mediocre feeling of emptiness in your life to something that feels necessary. I realised that filmmaking can be many things - and it can be narcotic in a way. You can become addicted to it.' Thomas Vinterberg / Hearts of Darkness Screen Epiphanies brings together 32 leading film-makers to discuss the films that inspired them to pursue a career in the movie business, or which influenced their own film-making practice, or which stayed with them because of their depictions of familiar communities, intense human relationships or unknown worlds. Beautifully illustrated with images from the films discussed, Screen Epiphanies is a thought-provoking and often moving insight into the creative process and the way in which artists are inspired by each other's work, but also into the centrality of cinema in all our lives, and its power to change our ambitions and how we see the world around us.

Book Description
Civilizations rise, and they fall, often by their own hand. Ours – is no different. And this is how it happened. Synopsis: Just outside a small town in America's heartland, a young Iowan farm boy, Josh Peterson, finds his life turned upside down by an odd series of reoccurring dreams. Suddenly caught in a violent assault, Josh watches as two mysterious figures from these dreams abruptly appear to intervene in his behalf. In one inexplicable moment, these men somehow suspend reality, and in the process, rescue him from certain death. In the years that follow, Josh struggles to understand what happened that day, and the meaning of the dreams that somehow come to shape his life. In time, he finds these images connect him to a people who once lived centuries earlier, and who were themselves rescued by these same men. While he wrestles with this, a cascading chain of global events begins to unfold around him, paralleling the tragedies he's witnessed in his dreams. Created by the arrogance of man, this crisis quickly begins to unravel the fabric of civilization, tracing out the now familiar pattern of 'Rise and Fall' – even as an unseen force lingers at the edge of perception, drawing Josh through an event anticipated eons in advance. This as civilization itself teeters on the lip of an abyss. Steve Lee

Book Description
*Best New Science Fiction for Summer by The Washington Post *A Most-Anticipated book of 2017 by The Millions Everyone else knows the truth about you, now you can know it, too. That’s the slogan. The product: a junky contraption that tattoos personalized revelations on its users’ forearms. It’s an old con, playing on the fear that we are obvious to everybody except ourselves. This particular ad has been circulating New York since the 1960s and it works. But, oddly enough, so might the device... A small stream of city dwellers buy into this cult of the epiphany machine, including Venter Lowood’s parents. This stigma follows them when they move upstate, where Venter can’t avoid the whispers of teachers and neighbors any more than he can ignore the machine’s accurate predictions: his mother’s abandonment and his father’s disinterest. So when Venter’s grandmother finally asks him to confront the epiphany machine and inoculate himself against his family’s mistakes, he’s only too happy to oblige. Like his parents before him, Venter is quick to fall under the spell of the device’s sweat-stained, profane, and surprisingly charming operator, Adam Lyons. But unlike them, Venter gets close enough to Adam to learn a dark secret. There’s an undeniable pattern between specific epiphanies and violent crimes. And Adam won’t jeopardize the privacy of his customers by alerting the police. It may be a hoax, but that doesn’t mean what Adam is selling isn’t also spot-on. And in this sprawling, snarling tragicomedy about accountability in contemporary America, the greater danger is that Adam Lyon’s apparatus may just be right about us all. This is "can't-miss pop culture."(Vox)

Book Description
The poetics of epiphany have long been recognised as a broad aesthetic trend of modernism, related to the power of art to reveal the hidden essence of reality. Yet the critical use of the concept is still contested, complicated by the fact that in many modernist works exceptional moments are anything but revealing. This book embraces the blurred nature of epiphanies and sets out to explore their effects in a comparative journey paralleling Anglophone and Italian modernist short fiction. The work of four modernist short story writers – Luigi Pirandello, James Joyce, Federigo Tozzi, and Katherine Mansfield – illuminates epiphanies as complex phenomena, connected to multiple aspects of modernist culture, which appear in artistic experiences developed independently in the same decades. The ideas of Henri Bergson, William James, Martin Heidegger, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, among others, nuance our understanding of the stories and of the author's vision behind them. At least three threads emerge, as a result, as common characteristics of modernist epiphanies. First, they are a result of the ‘inward turn’ and of the curiosity about the psyche’s subconscious processes. Second, they attempt to rediscover lived experience as a source of partial but reliable knowledge. Third, they re-actualise mystical experiences as conduits to a secular insight about life. The main appeal of these modernist moments of enlightenment is precisely that they establish an atmosphere of ambiguity where multiple and sometimes irreconcilable potential meanings can be found. By so doing, they succeed in evoking the undifferentiated creative potential that, according to the widespread vitalist philosophies of the age, constitutes the essence of life. In reframing ambiguity and indeterminacy as spaces of creation and choice, epiphanies thus bring out a lesser known, life-affirming but not naïve vein of modernist inspiration.
