Book Description
"Memory, of course, is sometimes like a bucking horse, sometimes a runaway one, and one must control the reins until finally it stops, snorting with exhausted relief," writes Natalie L. M. Petesch in her haunting new collection, The Confessions of Señora Francesca Navarro and Other Stories. Petesch immerses readers in the lives of people caught up in the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War, which left more than five hundred thousand dead. She captures the hand-to-mouth existence on the streets of Madrid of two war orphans; an old soldier's memories of a fallen militiawoman; the dilemma of Franco's laundress as she seeks to duplicate a stolen religious icon she finds in his home; and a man's struggle to find his bride among thousands of Republican refugees waiting for ships to evacuate them before Franco's Fascists arrive to kill them. In the title novella, an elderly woman describes to her granddaughter how the families of Franco's officers fighting against Republican militiamen endured hunger, filth, and danger in an underground fortress. Petesch conveys the humiliating details of war through the sensibility of a cultured woman who recalls only too vividly latrines made of laundry tubs, the smell of unwashed humans, and the stench of death. Brilliant in its imaginative power and heartbreaking in its access to the bottomless well of human tears, The Confessions of Señora Francesca Navarro and Other Stories is the work of a mature artist able to convey a particular world so vividly that we know these people as our own.

Book Description
Sometimes, beautiful gifts come in dreadful wrapping. Nobody plans to get into an accident. Especially one that could end your life, or life as you know it. No one aims to get cancer. You avoid it like the plague, and even as you hear loved ones getting it or even dying of it, you don’t wish it upon yourself. And while we all know we will die someday, we pray it doesn’t come too soon. We fear its pain. Its uncertainty. Its finality. In this bittersweet account, Rissa Singson Kawpeng bares her soul, her grief, and her victory as she stared at death—in the face of loved ones and in her own body. As she wrestled with life’s burning questions regarding sickness, suffering, and death, she finds her answers in the most elemental truth of the universe: God’s unconditional love.

Book Description
Confessions of a Thug Confessions of a Thug is an English novel written by Philip Meadows Taylor in 1839 based on the Thuggee cult in British India. Ameer Ali, the anti-hero protagonist of Confessions of a Thug, was said to be based on a real Thug called Syeed Amir Ali (or Feringhea), whom the author was acquainted with. Confessions of a Thug went on to become a bestseller in 19th century Britain. The story of the Thuggee cult was popularized by Confessions of a Thug, leading to the Hindi word "thug" entering the English language. The tale of crime which forms the subject of the following pages is, alas! almost all true; what there is of fiction has been supplied only to connect the events, and make the adventures of Ameer Ali as interesting as the nature of his horrible profession would permit me. In this manner Thuggee was found to be in active practice all over India. The knowledge of its existence was at first confined to the central provinces, but as men were apprehended from a distance, they gave information of others beyond them in the almost daily commission of murder: the circle gradually widened till it spread over the whole continent—and from the foot of the Himalayas to Cape Comorin, from Cutch to Assam, there was hardly a province in the whole of India where Thuggee had not been practised—where the statements of the informers were not confirmed by the disinterment of the dead!
