Author: Dan Curley
Publisher: Indiana University Press
ISBN: 9781950066001
Category : Poetry

Book Description
Conditional Future Perfect, Dan Curley's first book of poetry, is richly comic and subtly serious. The forty-eight poems in this volume invite us to share the daily wonders and blunders of family life, the ephemeral feelings and lasting lessons of travel (in Italy, mostly Rome), and to hear a range of elegies and other life stories that take us outside ourselves. In poem after poem, Curley is thoughtful, conversational, and witty. This is accessible poetry of the everyday that nevertheless lifts us to new heights of comprehension, revealing our inevitable follies and essential dignity. Francesca Bell, author of Bright Stain, writes, "Dan Curley's poetry collection, Conditional Future Perfect, abounds with deeply reverent irreverence and a rollicking, wry melancholy. With spectacular ease and grace, Curley infuses this book with jazz and Milwaukee, with kitties and barleywine and Sophocles, with carcolepsy and Ovid and 'the ahem / of gravity'. Each poem is finely constructed, lovingly honed, and seems to gaze at the world, despite its plentiful complications and disappointments, with a helpless, amused adoration. I say, come to these poems for their sweetness, their delight, but don't let sorrow hit you on the way out."

Spanish-English Contrasts
Author: Melvin Stanley Whitley
Publisher: Georgetown University Press
ISBN: 9780878403813
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 410
Book Description
An invaluable text in language and linguistics because it has a unique scope: a one-volume description of the Spanish language and its differences from English, and ranges from pronunciation and grammar to word meaning, language use, and social and dialectical variation. Designed for survey courses in Spanish linguistics with technical concepts explained in context for beginners in the field, Spanish/English Contrasts brings out the ways in which insights into the two languages have evolved as scholars have built on the work and research of others in the field. A bilingual glossary of linguistic terms is provided to facilitate discussion in either language. This second edition is thoroughly updated to incorporate insights and issues that have come to the fore from the explosion of research in the past twenty-five years in all of the areas covered by the book. It includes an expanded bibliography and index, and adds new exercises for student application and class discussion. Its approach remains broadly based however, in order to accommodate a range of areas and data rather than focusing narrowly on one single theory or research area, and it continues to emphasize implications for language teaching, translation, and other practical applications.

Understanding and Interpreting Data on the Learning of English Tenses and Verb Forms
Author: Jason Miin-Hwa Lim
Publisher: Partridge Publishing Singapore
ISBN: 1543762468
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 283
Book Description
Guiding learners to acquire sufficient knowledge of grammar constitutes an interesting domain in the field of teaching English as a second language. This research-based resource book focuses on the learning of English tenses and verbal categories, which forms a huge and fascinating component of English grammar that merits attention in teachers’ attempts to improve their students’ English proficiency. Inspired by concepts relating to explicit learning, consciousness raising, contrastive analysis and error analysis, the author used a wealth of data derived from a set of elicitation procedures to reveal the linguistic interference encountered by second language learners. Arguing for the need to conceptualise grammatical rules positively, this inquiry focuses on studying learners’ wide-ranging responses to a large number of items designed to explore linguistic interference in the learning of English verb forms in eight major categories. The findings, explanations and illustration-based recommendations provided in this volume will give trainee teachers, instructors and researchers deeper insights into how strategies can be aptly employed to enhance learners’ performance in using English verb forms and related grammatical categories, which constitute a key dimension in the learning and teaching of English as a second language.

Logical English Grammar
Author: Marlon A. Jaun
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 3746063434
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 98
Book Description
Dear English students, teachers and interested party, this book you hold in your hand is very valuable to learn and teach English grammar with a system of clear definitions and in a logical way. I found out that in different grammar books and also different teachers from English schools are used different descriptions for the same meaning. When I was an English language student in Cambridge (UK), 2017, the English grammar was confused for me, because I`m a logical thinker and I will learn with a system, but I couldn`t found a logical system to learn the English grammar. The most problem was that I found different descriptions for the same meaning in different grammar books. As example in some grammar books is written Simple Past and in others Past Simple, but it is still the same. But also continuous and progressive is the same. Another difficult point was the English Tenses, because I couldn`t find a table with all Tenses so I don`t know how many they has. Also here was the problem that for the same Tense I found different descriptions. As example the Past continuous is the same as Past progressive. Another problem was that also different teachers used different descriptions for the same Tense. In some cases they described and explained the Past progressive and other teachers call them Past continuous although it is the same. Completely confused was that this Past progressive in some grammar book is called Past continuous too. This book offers you to learn grammar in a short time, because it is logical and it is a summary of different sources. Don`t waste your time anymore to research in different books to find out what`s the meaning, definitions and descriptions is. This book solving a lot of problems which students have and it is in a compact form. With this book you save money and time. Sincerely M.A. Jaun

Analyzing the Grammar of English
Author: Richard V. Teschner
Publisher: Georgetown University Press
ISBN: 9781589012400
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 252
Book Description
Analyzing the Grammar of English offers a descriptive analysis of the indispensable elements of English grammar. Designed to be covered in one semester, this textbook starts from scratch and takes nothing for granted beyond a reading and speaking knowledge of English. Extensively revised to function better in skills-building classes, it includes more interspersed exercises that promptly test what is taught, simplified and clarified explanations, greatly expanded and more diverse activities, and a new glossary of over 200 technical terms. Analyzing the Grammar of English is the only English grammar to view the sentence as a strictly punctuational construct—anything that begins with a capital letter and ends with a period, a question mark, an exclamation mark, or three dots—rather than a syntactic one, and to load, in consequence, all the necessary syntactic analysis onto the clause and its constituents. It is also one of the very few English grammars to include—alongside multiple examples of canonical or "standard" language—occasional samples of stigmatized speech to illustrate grammar points. Students and teachers in courses of English grammatical analysis, English teaching methods, TESOL methods, and developmental English will all benefit from this new edition.
