Book Description
This report presents a cost analysis of Concentrated Nitric Acid (99 wt%) production from weak nitric acid (65 wt%). The process examined is a typical Sulfuric Acid process. In this process, weak nitric acid (65 wt%) is concentrated up to 99 wt% Nitric Acid by extractive distillation using sulfuric acid as dehydrating agent. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): Keywords: Nitric Acid, Sulfuric Acid Process, Strong Nitric Acid, Dehydration

Book Description
This monograph consists of manuscripts submitted by invited speakers who participated in the symposium "Industrial Environmental Chemistry: Waste Minimization in Industrial Processes and Remediation of Hazardous Waste," held March 24-26, 1992, at Texas A&M University. This meeting was the tenth annual international symposium sponsored by the Texas A&M Industry-University Cooperative Chemistry Program (IUCCP). The program was developed by an academic-industrial steering committee consisting of the co-chairmen, Professors Donald T. Sawyer and Arthur E. Martell of the Texas A&M University Chemistry Department, and members appointed by the sponsoring companies: Bernie A. Allen, Jr., Dow Chemical USA; Kirk W. Brown, Texas A&M University; Abraham Clearfield, Texas A&M University; Greg Leyes, Monsanto Company; Jay Warner, Hoechst-Celanese Corporation; Paul M. Zakriski, BF Goodrich Company; and Emile A. Schweikert, Texas A&M University (IUCCP Coordinator). The subject of this conference reflects the interest that has developed in academic institutions and industry for technological solutions to environmental contamination by industrial wastes. Progress is most likely with strategies that minimize waste production from industrial processes. Clearly the key to the protection and preservation of the environment will be through R&D that optimizes chemical processes to minimize or eliminate waste streams. Eleven of the papers are directed to waste minimization. An additional ten papers discuss chemical and biological remediation strategies for hazardous wastes that contaminate soils, sludges, and water.

Book Description
This report presents a cost analysis of Concentrated Nitric Acid (99 wt%) production from ammonia. The process examined comprises two integrated units: a typical Medium Pressure process for weak nitric acid production; and a typical Sulfuric Acid concentration process for Concentrated Nitric Acid (99 wt%) production. In this process, ammonia is initially oxidized to nitric oxide at medium pressure (4 - 6 bar abs). The nitric oxide is oxidized to form nitrogen dioxide, and absorbed (at the same pressure) by water producing 65 wt% Nitric Acid. Then, weak nitric acid (65 wt%) is concentrated up to 99 wt% Nitric Acid by extractive distillation using sulfuric acid as dehydrating agent. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): Keywords: Nitric Acid, Ostwald Process, Single Pressure, Medium Pressure, Ammonia Absorption, HNO3, Sulfuric Acid Process, Strong Nitric Acid, Dehydration

Book Description
One of the major biomedical triumphs of the post-World War II era was the defmitive demonstration that hypercholesterolemia is a key causative factor in atherosclerosis; that hypercholesterolemia can be effectively treated; and that treatment significantly reduces not only coronary disease mortality but also all cause mortality. Treatment to lower plasma levels of cholesterol - primarily low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol - is now accepted as best medical practice and both physicians and patients are being educated to take aggressive measures to lower LDL. We can confidently look forward to important decreases in the toll of coronary artery disease over the coming decades. However, there is still uncertainty as to the exact mechanisms by which elevated plasma cholesterol and LDL levels initiate and favor the progression of lesions. There is general consensus that one of the earliest responses to hypercholesterolemia is the adhesion of monocytes to aortic endothelial cells followed by their penetration into the subendothelial space, where they differentiate into macrophages. These cells, and also medial smooth muscle cells that have migrated into the subendothelial space, then become loaded with mUltiple, large droplets of cholesterol esters . . . the hallmark of the earliest visible atherosclerotic lesion, the so-called fatty streak. This lesion is the precursor of the more advanced lesions, both in animal models and in humans. Thus the centrality of hypercholesterolemia cannot be overstated. Still, the atherogenic process is complex and evolves over a long period of time.

Book Description
A comprehensive and authoritative survey of recent findings, ideas, and hypotheses about the causes and treatment of diabetic nephropathy. The authors cover both the basic pathogenic mechanisms of the disease, as well as many of its clinical aspects of identification, management, and new therapeutic approaches. Highlights include an entire section devoted to novel approaches to studying diabetic nephropathy with the most advanced molecular techniques, and complete descriptions of the most up-to-date views on the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. The Diabetic Kidney offers both researchers and practicing clinicians a clear understanding of the of the progress that has been made regarding the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy and of the therapeutic interventions needed to prevent its development or treat it.
