The Server
Author: Markus Krajewski
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300186800
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 454
Book Description
A cutting†‘edge media history on a perennially fascinating topic, which attempts to answer the crucial question: Who is in charge, the servant or the master?†‹ Though classic servants like the butler or the governess have largely vanished, the Internet is filled with servers: web, ftp, mail, and others perform their daily drudgery, going about their business noiselessly and unnoticed. Why then are current†‘day digital drudges called servers? Markus Krajewski explores this question by going from the present back to the Baroque to study historical aspects of service through various perspectives, be it the servants’ relationship to architecture or their function in literary or scientific contexts. At the intersection of media studies, cultural history, and literature, this work recounts the gradual transition of agency from human to nonhuman actors to show how the concept of the digital server stems from the classic role of the servant.

Glossar Zur Bildungstechnologie
Author:
Publisher: Bernan Press(PA)
ISBN:
Category : Education
Languages : de
Pages : 280
Book Description
This glossary, prepared by the International Council of Educational Media (ICEM), groups in one volume the English and German terms related to educational technology in order to facilitate understanding of these terms and to promote communication at the international level. Analysis of terms from the fields of audiovisual teaching, programmed learning, and educational television and documentation, produced an inventory of nearly 3,000 terms which were edited by teams of experts in three languages to determine which were the most important terms according to criteria of relevance and frequency of use. This list contained about 100 words pertaining to computer technology. Following revisions by various groups, the final glossary contains about 1,650 entries. It has been published in a series, of which this volume is the latest; it had previously appeared in English-French/French-English; English-Spanish/Spanish-English; and English-Russian/Russian-English editions. In this volume, the English list and the German list are presented in separate sections, and in both sections the equivalent English or German term is given as a quick reference following the definition given in the other language. Entries are classified in alphabetical order with the determiner before the noun in languages where appropriate. The definitions proposed by the International Electrotechnical Commission and the International Organization for Standardization were retained whenever possible. (Contains 37 references.) (ALF)
