Author: John Frederick Burrows
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN:
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 280
Book Description
In this book, John Burrows reveals that prepositions, conjunctions, personal pronouns, and articles--the part of speech that make up at least one third of fictional works in English--can tell us a great deal about the characters who speak them. By computing the frequency which with characters use words such as "the," "of," "it," and "I", it becomes possible to study character development in an even clearer light than before. What emerges from this unique study is the groundwork for more authoritative literary judgements.

Philosophical Difference and Advanced Computation in Architectural Theory
Author: Jefferson Ellinger
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000452115
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 187
Book Description
This book presents a new take on the evolution of digital design theories in architecture from modernity to today, as they have been inspired both by contemporary philosophy and the emergence and access to advanced computation. It focuses on how concepts of difference in philosophy transformed architectural design theory and takes on even more significance with the introduction and ubiquitous use of computers within the discipline, changing the architectural design paradigm forever. Beginning with a presentation of American Pragmatism’s push towards process, the book continues on to Husserl’s influence on the modern movement, mid-century phenomenology, post-structuralist Derridean exchanges with architects, the Deleuzian influence on the smoothing of form and finally contemporary architectural references to speculative realism. Analyzing the arc of design theory as influenced by philosophical and computational logics, this book presents the transformation to contemporary design approaches that includes more biology, more data and more information, moving from "less is more" to "From Less to More!" Philosophical Difference and Advanced Computation in Architectural Theory is an influential read for students and academics of architectural theory, computational design and related areas.

Computation and the Humanities
Author: Julianne Nyhan
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319201700
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 288
Book Description
This book addresses the application of computing to cultural heritage and the discipline of Digital Humanities that formed around it. Digital Humanities research is transforming how the Human record can be transmitted, shaped, understood, questioned and imagined and it has been ongoing for more than 70 years. However, we have no comprehensive histories of its research trajectory or its disciplinary development. The authors make a first contribution towards remedying this by uncovering, documenting, and analysing a number of the social, intellectual and creative processes that helped to shape this research from the 1950s until the present day. By taking an oral history approach, this book explores questions like, among others, researchers’ earliest memories of encountering computers and the factors that subsequently prompted them to use the computer in Humanities research. Computation and the Humanities will be an essential read for cultural and computing historians, digital humanists and those interested in developments like the digitisation of cultural heritage and artefacts. Reading Machines
Author: Stephen Ramsay
Publisher: University of Illinois Press
ISBN: 0252093445
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 114
Book Description
Besides familiar and now-commonplace tasks that computers do all the time, what else are they capable of? Stephen Ramsay's intriguing study of computational text analysis examines how computers can be used as "reading machines" to open up entirely new possibilities for literary critics. Computer-based text analysis has been employed for the past several decades as a way of searching, collating, and indexing texts. Despite this, the digital revolution has not penetrated the core activity of literary studies: interpretive analysis of written texts. Computers can handle vast amounts of data, allowing for the comparison of texts in ways that were previously too overwhelming for individuals, but they may also assist in enhancing the entirely necessary role of subjectivity in critical interpretation. Reading Machines discusses the importance of this new form of text analysis conducted with the assistance of computers. Ramsay suggests that the rigidity of computation can be enlisted in the project of intuition, subjectivity, and play.

›Prometheus Bound‹ – A Separate Authorial Trace in the Aeschylean Corpus
Author: Nikos Manousakis
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 311068781X
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 327
Book Description
Classics, Computer Science, and Linguistics are brought together in this book, in an attempt to provide an answer to the authorship question concerning Prometheus Bound, a disputed play in the Aeschylean corpus, by applying some well-established Computer Stylistics methods. One of the main objectives of Stylometry, which, broadly speaking, is the study of quantified style, is Authorship Attribution. In its traditional form it can range from manually calculating descriptive statistics to the use of computer-assisted methodologies. However, non-traditional Authorship Attribution drastically changed the field. It brought together modern Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence applications (machine learning, natural language processing), and its key characteristic is that it aims at developing fully-automated systems for the attribution of texts of unknown authorship. In this book the author employs a series of supervised and unsupervised techniques used in non-traditional Authorship Attribution–applied here for the first time in ancient drama. The outcome of the analysis indicates a significant distance between the disputed text and the secure plays of Aeschylus, but also various interesting (micro-linguistic) ties of affinity with other authors, especially Sophocles and Euripides.

Literary Detective Work on the Computer
Author: Michael P. Oakes
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing Company
ISBN: 9027270139
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 295
Book Description
Computational linguistics can be used to uncover mysteries in text which are not always obvious to visual inspection. For example, the computer analysis of writing style can show who might be the true author of a text in cases of disputed authorship or suspected plagiarism. The theoretical background to authorship attribution is presented in a step by step manner, and comprehensive reviews of the field are given in two specialist areas, the writings of William Shakespeare and his contemporaries, and the various writing styles seen in religious texts. The final chapter looks at the progress computers have made in the decipherment of lost languages. This book is written for students and researchers of general linguistics, computational and corpus linguistics, and computer forensics. It will inspire future researchers to study these topics for themselves, and gives sufficient details of the methods and resources to get them started.

Electronic Texts in the Humanities
Author: Susan Hockey
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191583286
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 234
Book Description
With word processing and the Internet, computing is much more part and parcel of the everyday life of the humanities scholar, but computers can do much more than assist with writing or Internet searching. This book introduces a range of tools and techniques for manipulating and analysing electronic texts in the humanities. It shows how electronic texts can be used for the literary analysis, linguistic analysis, authorship attribution, and the preparation and publication of electronic scholarly editions. It assesses the ways in which research in corpus and computational linguistics can feed into better electronic tools for humanities research. The tools and techniques discussed in this book will feed into better Internet tools and pave the way for the electronic scholar of the twenty-first century.
