Book Description
Excerpt from Compound Locomotives In the preparation of the series of articles for the columns of the National Car and Locomotive Builder which are here collected in book form, the aim of the author was to combine the description of the various forms of com pound locomotives which have been actually used, with so much of the theory of the design of compound engines as would seem to be directly applicable to locomotive prao tice. Book Description
Excerpt from The Compound Locomotive, Vol. 12: Supplement to the Science of Railways It is not surprising, inasmuch as the Opinions Of engineers and firemen respecting the opera tion of simple engines differ so widely, that there should be much controversy among them in re gard to the operation of compound locomotives. Experience on the part of those operating the compound locomotive will tend to its better service and consequently greater development. Many prejudices against it are due to lack of. Ao quaintance with its operation. This is true of every new thing. Especially is it true in the case of compounds where a railway has few loco motives of this kind. The feeling is but natural, if we remember, as we should, that in the handling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Locomotive Compounding and Superheating: A Practical Text-Book for the Use of Railway and Locomotive Engineers, Students, and Draughtsmen IT is now just upon thirty years since the first practical compound locomotives were built, but even yet the compound locomotive does not occupy the universally accepted position which theory would suggest that it should do. But whereas in the early years of its existence as a definite feature of locomotive engineering practice it was looked upon in most quarters with disfavour and distrust, and the engineers first concerned with the design of such engines had to contend against prejudice and opposition, and had no easy task to obtain even a trial of their systems, now the position is far more favourable, and compound locomotives according to many different systems are today in use to the number of many thousands in various parts of the world. In fact, it is not claiming too much to say that the compound locomotive occupies to-day an assured position, and it is probable that before many years have passed it will become a standard feature of locomotive engineering in all countries. Book Description
Excerpt from Locomotives Simple, Compound, and Electric There are many excellent books on the locomotive, but there is one portion Of the subject which, in the author's opinion, has not yet been covered. The man who wishes to understand an engine thor oughly will, learn more by watching repairs made in the shop, or in case Of accident on the road, when the engine is disconnected, than if the method were de scribed to him in so many words; for he thus sees the actual construction, break, and repairs. Book Description
Excerpt from Locomotive Boilers, Steam Cylinders and Valve Gears, Locomotive Management, Breakdowns, Compound Locomotives The International Library of Technology is the outgrowth of a large and increasing demand that has arisen for the Reference Libraries of the International Correspondence Schools on the part of those who are not students of the Schools. As the volumes composing this Library are all printed from the same plates used in printing the Reference Libraries above mentioned, a few words are necessary regarding the scope and purpose of the instruction imparted to the students oi - and the class of students taught by - these Schools, in order to afford a clear understanding of their salient and unique features. The only requirement for admission to any of the courses offered by the International Correspondence Schools is that the applicant shall be able to read the English language and to write it sufficiently well to make his written answers to the questions asked him intelligible. Each course is complete in itself, and no textbooks are required other than those prepared by the Schools for the particular course selected. The students themselves are from every class, trade, and profession and from every country; they are, almost without exception, busily engaged in some vocation, and can spare but little time for study, and that usually outside of their regular working hours. The information desired is such as can be immediately applied in practice, so that the student may be enabled to ex hange his present vocation for a more congenial one or to rise to a higher level in the one he now pursues. Furthermore, they wish to obtain a good working knowledge of the subjects treated, in the shortest time and in the most direct manner possible.
