Book Description
Excerpt from Complete Works of Rev. Thomas Smyth, D.D, Vol. 7 Such and so great, such and no less than this, is every christian. What then is the principle by which, in this holy and beav enly task, the christian is sustained? That principle is faith; and the delineation of this truth is the one object of the present treatise. The term missions is of Latin, and not of scriptural origin. It is therefore delusive, by leading many to imagine that the enterprise it expresses is of human, and not of divine appoint ment. The word, however, is only a brief translation of scrip tural terms which indicate the chief end and work of the Church and of every believer. These are both sent into the world, prepared and delegated by God to propagate the gospel, and to evange'lize the world. Book Description
Excerpt from Complete Works of Rev. Thomas Smyth, D.D, Vol. 6 There are many prophetical passages in the Old Testament, which all bear upon one grand point, and that is the appearance of a mighty deliverer who should come to overthrow the king dom of darkness, recover men from moral and physical evil. And restore the age of primitive peace and holiness. These vaticinations extend chronologically from the garden of Eden. Through the patriarchal and levitical dispensations, to the ad vent Oi Him of whom they speak, and now extend to the sec ond advent Of the same glorious Being, at the final dissolution of all things by a fearful deluge of fire. To reveal and make known this coming Redeemer, as the foundation of human hopes and expectations, was the great end and object of the patriarchal dispensation. The knowledge of the Divine unity, the inculcation of morality, the illustration of the Divine at tributes, or any truths of natural theology, which were already known, were wholly insufficient to meet the wants of man's fallen condition. Men must have understood the Obvious and no doubt clearly explained meaning of the original promise concerning the seed of the woman. This was made evident to them by the visible manifestation of this voice of Jehovah the word or name of the Lord in the garden. This character - the man Jehovah who spake with Abraham, wrestled with Jacob, and frequently appeared to the ancient patriarchs always manifested Himself in the outward fashion as a man, and is ordinarily styled the angel or messenger of By Him the institution of sacrifices was given to our first parents, and the language of Eve makes it plain that she um derstood the promised seed to be the Divine word or voice manifested in human form l' and the universal prevalence of sacrifices, as expiatory and vicarious, proves also that the doc trine of atonement, in its grand outlines, must have been made known to our first parents. Book Description
Excerpt from Complete Works of Rev. Thomas Smyth, D.D, Vol. 9 From the very nature of the case, we conclude that this must be so. What man loves, he clings to and defends; for where the treasure is, there will the heart be also. What is worth proclaiming, is worth preserving, and what we feel it our duty to believe, we feel it our duty to defend. What we value we will maintain. And earnestly contend for, against all who would defraud us of it. Things must become the subjects of conten tion in proportion to their importance, and religion and reli gious truth being unspeakably the most important things in the world, no man can be either seriously or sincerely a christian, who will not contend earnestly for his faith, and hope, against all Opposers. The cause of such contention is not in religion, any more than it is in science or liberty, or social rights. The fault, in every case of controversy, is in the different under standings, tempers, interests, passions, and prejudices of man kind, incited by the great enemy of all peace. As long as these lead to opinions and practices contrary to the truth in science, liberty, or religion, there must be, as the Apostles say, divisions. And contendings and defendings. So long as, on whatever plea, the citadel of truth is assailed, the sentinel must give warning, the garrison must appear under arms, and that citadel must be defended; and he that acts otherwise will and must be a traitor to science, to his country, and to his God.
