This volume contains the written versions of the lectures delivered by the participants of the Colloquium Origenianum Nonum held in Pecs (Hungary, 29 August - 2 September 2005). The main topic of the conference was Origen and the religious practice of his time. Here 49 scholars from some 18 countries publish their newest findings on the greatest and most influential Christian thinker before Augustine, who laid the foundation of the Biblical textual studies, created systematic theology, and was regarded as an authentic spiritual leader of Christianity. The papers not only provide the best overview on a lively field of studies but also demonstrate how Origen's heritage in Christian history, theology and spirituality carried with it the imprint of one of the most vital traditions of our civilization. Similarly to the volumes of the earlier conferences (Boston 1989, Chantilly 1993, Hofgeismar-Marburg 1997 and Pisa 2001), the contributions are published by the series Bibliotheca Ephemeridum Theologicarum Lovaniensium.

Modern moral and political philosophy is in debt with natural law theory, both in its ancient and mediaeval elaborations. While the very notion of a natural law has proved highly controversial among 20th Century scholars, the last decades have witnessed a renewed interest in it. Indeed, the threats and challenges as result of multiculturalism, plural societies and global changes have generated a renewed attention to natural law theory. Clearly, it offers solid basis as possible framework to a better understanding of human goods without contradictions and partial bias. The purpose of the present volume is to provide an overview of the history of this concept (Cicero, St. Paul, Aquinas, Melanchthon, Montaigne, Descartes, Leibniz, Hume, Burke, Kant, MacIntyre, etc.) as well as a deep understanding of ongoing research, both in Europe and in America. Furthermore, the specificity of these studies will be of particular value to philosophers, law-philosophers, historians, anthropologists, sociologists and theologians, and those concerned on such issues as the relation between law and moral norm, law and practical reason, and the presence of the idea of natural law in several prominent thinkers. Winner of the Ezra Pound Society Book Prize 2014 Ezra Pound's sustained use of ancient and medieval philosophical sources, particularly those within the Neoplatonic tradition, is well known. Yet the specific influence of the ninth-century theologian Johannes Scottus Eriugena on Pound's poetry and prose has received limited scholarly attention. Pound developed detailed plans to publish a commentary on Eriugena alongside his translations of two of the books of Confucianism, plans that ultimately went unrealised. Drawing on unpublished notes, drafts and manuscripts amongst the Ezra Pound papers held at Yale University, this book investigates the pivotal role of Eriugena in Pound's thought and, perhaps surprisingly, in his deployment of non-Western philosophical traditions.
