The present study adds to the literature on the influence of individual characteristics on the news by examining male and female reporters in local and network broadcast stations on a number of factors: news source selection, source prominence (source position, professional capacity), story topic, and location of story in the newscast. Specifically, this study examined whether there are differences between male and female broadcast reporters and their selection of news sources, whether there are differences in news sources, and whether there are differences between local and national news media. This study found that male and female reporters tend to select their sources similarly and that both genders of reporters are biased when they choose their sources. Male sources were most frequently used as professional sources in both local and network stations. And female sources were used as professional sources more often in network stations than local stations. It is also found that female reporters are differentiated in the stories they cover and where they are placed in the newscast, especially in local stations.

The media carry significant notions of social and cultural norms and values and have a powerful role in constructing and reinforcing gendered images. The news in particular has an important role in how notions of power are distributed in the society. This report presents study findings on how women and men are represented in the news in the Nordic countries, and to what extent women and men occupy the decision-making positions in the media. The survey is based on the recent findings from three cross-national research projects. These findings are supported by national studies. The results indicate that in all the Nordic countries women are underrepresented in the news media both as news subjects and as sources of information. Men also dominate in higher-level decision-making positions. The report includes examples of measures used to improve the gender balance in Nordic news.
