Book Description
Pollution Ecology of Estuarine Invertebrates, as its companion volume ""Pollution Ecology of Freshwater Invertebrates"", aims to present the ecology of estuarine invertebrates and highlight some systematic interpretations. This book also discusses the knowledge about these invertebrates. It is a compilation of existing data at the time of writing, an attempt to introduce ideas and information, and a result of synthesis of systematic interpretations. This book consists of 12 chapters, each with a specific invertebrate as subject area. The invertebrates encompassed in this book are thread and bristle worms, Bryozoa, ostracods, copepods, crabs, shrimps, larval decapods, Cyathura, isopods (other than Cyathura), amphipods, clams, and snails. Each chapter gives a thorough discussion of the featured invertebrate according to some of the organism’s aspects, such as habitat, systematic, zoogeography, pollution ecology, life cycle, physiology, population, taxonomy, and distribution. This book is a valuable source for students, teachers, scientists, or researchers interested in estuarine invertebrates and pollution and study biology, environmental science, zoology, or even marine science.

Gastrotricha and Gnathifera
Author: Andreas Schmidt-Rhaesa
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110274272
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 366
Book Description
This section of the Handbook of Zoology is intended as a comprehensive and exhaustive account of the biology of the taxa Gastrotricha, Nematoda, Nematomorpha, Priapulida, Kinorhyncha, Loricifera, Gnathostomulida, Micrognathozoa, Rotifera, Seisonida and Acanthocephala, covering all relevant topics such as morphology, ecology, phylogeny and diversity. The series is intended to be a detailed and up-to-date account of these taxa. As was the case with the first edition, the Handbook is intended to serve as a reliable resource for decades. Many of the taxa of this volume are comparatively unknown to many biologists, despite their diversity and importance for example in meiofaunal communities (Gastrotricha, Rotifera, Gnathostomulida), their fascinating recent discoveries (Loricifera and Micrognathozoa), their importance as parasites (many nematodes, Nematomorpha, Acanthocephala) and their importance for evolutionary questions (e.g. Priapulida, Gastrotricha). The groups covered range from those poor in species (such as Micrognathozoa with 2 known species) to the species-rich and diverse Nematoda and their ca. 20.000 described species. While each taxon is covered by one chapter, nematodes are treated in several chapters dedicated to their structural, taxonomic and ecological diversity.

The Oosterschelde Estuary (The Netherlands): a Case-Study of a Changing Ecosystem
Author: P.H. Nienhuis
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 940111174X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 605
Book Description
The Oosterschelde estuary is one of the estuaries in the Netherlands which remained after the Delta scheme was completed in 1986. In the seventies the Oosterschelde became a national symbol of the change in political thinking and decision making about the values of our natural environment. As a result of political decision a storm surge barrier was built in the mouth of the estuary, as a compromise between safety for the human population and nature conservation. Owing to the broad interest in the meaning of the Oosterschelde estuary for Dutch and international societies, it became one of the most intensively studied coastal ecosystems in Western Europe. In an interdisciplinary approach of several state agencies and universities, a broad spectrum of physical, chemical and biological research has been carried out during the period of 1980--1989, dedicated to the structure and functioning of the saline ecosystem. The undisturbed estuary was studied during the period between 1980--1984. Large mathematical models had been constructed before 1986, to simulate future changes in the ecosystem. Further studies after the completion of the storm surge barrier (1986--1989) have been used for verification of the model. The integrated and summarized knowledge of the Oosterschelde ecosystem is used by water managers and nature and fisheries conservationists. A case study for professional civil engineers, ecologists, marine biologists, water managers, decision makers, university students and anyone interested in physical, chemical and biological estuarine and coastal sciences.
