Book Description
Age of Anxiety: Meaning, Identity, and Politics in 21st Century Film and Literature analyzes literature and films that speak to our age of anxiety resulting from the decline of narratives that provided individuals with a meaningful human life. The authors argue that the twentieth-century sought to free individuals from the constraints of authoritative cultural traditions and institutions, liberating the autonomous self. Yet this has given rise to anxiety rather than liberation. Instead of deriving one’s sense of purpose from one’s role and place within a community, the consumer has been deceived into thinking that their identity can be purchased through the meaning represented by the conspicuous consumption of a brand. The same phenomenon manifests itself in politics within recent populist revolts against globalist politics. In addition, the rapid pace of technological development is driving an unprecedented faith in the malleability of human beings, raises doubts as to what it means to be a person. Utilizing paradigms from the fields of Communication/Rhetoric and Political Philosophy the book shows how the self has been displaced from its natural habitat of the local community. The book traces the origins of modern anxiety as well as possible remedies. Considered in the book are such popular culture artifacts as Downton Abbey, WALL-E, Hacksaw Ridge, Westworld, and Lord of the Rings and zombie films.

Book Description
The study of group communication has never been more critical, as recent national and international events point to the fragility of group life. An emerging perspective, the bona fide group perspective, offers hope for improving group communication, for it recognizes that any group--a family, community group, expedition team, social support group, organizational work group, interorganizational collaboration, or international team--must be studied and understood within the multiple contexts in which it is embedded and that significantly affects who is considered to be part of a group, what occurs within that group, and how that group interacts with other groups. In the second edition of his award-winning volume, editor Lawrence R. Frey showcases original research studies conducted on and about communication in bona fide groups, demonstrating the conceptual promise of the bona fide group perspective as realized in research practice. Divided into six sections, the chapters cover a wide range of new or relatively understudied groups--including youth community groups, Internet support groups, climbing expedition groups, families, neighborhoods, and school boards--and demonstrate the wealth of methodological approaches that can be used to study bona fide group communication--including survey methods, interviews, textual analysis, content analysis, participant observation, and discourse analysis. Group Communication in Context: Studies of Bona Fide Groups, Second Edition shows that the bona fide group perspective has the power to transform our thinking about groups and group communication and, in time, the practices in which groups and group members engage. The volume is intended for use in group communication courses, as well as a reference for group scholars. It is also appropriate for classes in psychology, social work, counseling, sociology, anthropology, and related disciplines.

Book Description
Proposes an innovative, holistic understanding of technology. The Beauty of Detours proposes a new way of understanding and defining technology by reading systems thinker Gregory Bateson in the framework of contemporary philosophy of technology. Although “technology” was not an explicit focus of Bateson’s oeuvre, Yoni Van Den Eede shows that his thought is permeated with insights directly relevant to contemporary technological concerns. This book provides a systematic reading of Bateson that reveals these under-investigated elements of his thought. It also critiques the field of philosophy of technology for still reifying “technology” too much despite its attempt to de-reify it, arguing instead that it should incorporate Bateson’s insights and focus more on processes of human knowing. Sketching a Batesonian philosophy of technology, Van Den Eede calls for greater attentiveness to the purpose of technology and its role in our lives. “This book offers a thorough and well-researched dive into Bateson’s thinking on purpose, instrumentalism, technology, and epistemology. It is an important contribution to the discourse on AI and on the rapid development of the tech sector. Philosophically the book tackles difficult systemic questions about technology and addresses them at a much more sophisticated level than most books of its kind.” — Nora Bateson, The International Bateson Institute

Book Description
This book contains the refereed proceedings of the 3rd International IFIP-TC6 Networking Conference, Networking 2004. Conferences in the Networking series span the interests of several distinct, but related, TC6 working groups, including Working Groups 6.2, 6.3, and 6.8. Re?ecting this, the conference was structured with three Special Tracks: (i) Networking Technologies, Services, and Protocols; (ii) Performance of Computer and Communication Networks; and (iii) Mobile and Wireless Communications. However, beyond providing a forum for the presentation of high-quality - search in various complementary aspects of networking, the conference was also targetedtocontributingtoauni?edviewofthe?eldandtofosteringtheinter- tion and exchange of fruitful ideas between the various related (and overlapping) specialized subcommunities therein. Towards this second objective, more than a few conference sessions (and thematic sections in this book) ‘cut across’ the Special Tracks, along more generic or fundamental concepts. Networking 2004 was fortunate to attract very high interest among the c- munity, and the conference received 539 submissions from 44 countries in all ?ve continents. These ?gures correspond to a remarkable increase in subm- sions from the previous very successful events (roughly, a 156% increase over Networking 2000 and 71% over Networking 2002), and indicate that Netw- king conferences are progressively becoming established as worldwide reference events in the ?eld.
