Book Description
This FAO/WHO handbook on risk communication was developed to support national food safety authorities and food chain stakeholders in establishing or enhancing risk communication practice and capacity on food safety. It further targets agriculture/agrifood and public health institutions, which frequently share governmental responsibility for food safety at the country and/or regional level. This handbook focuses on practical principles and best practices of risk communication to support risk management of adverse food safety events associated with biological, chemical or physical hazards. It addresses the use of risk communication in the process of risk analysis to manage both food safety emergencies as well as recurring food safety issues such as health promotion campaigns. Many aspects are applicable to effective risk communication in support of feed safety, animal health and zoonotic disease management.

Book Description
Official and officially recognized inspection and certification systems are fundamentally important and very widely used means of food control systems. The confidence of consumers in the safety and quality of their food supply depends in part on their perception as to the effectiveness of these systems as food control measures. A substantial part of the worldwide trade in food depends upon the use of inspection and certification systems. Following the FAO/WHO Conference on Food Standards, Chemicals in Food and Food Trade in 1991, the Codex Alimentarius Commission undertook the development of guidance documents for governments and other interested parties on Food Import and Export Inspection and Certification Systems. This third edition includes texts adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission up to 2007.

The updated strategy addresses current and emerging challenges, incorporates new technologies and includes innovative approaches for strengthening food safety systems. The target audience includes policy-makers (national and subnational governments), technical authorities/agencies responsible for food safety, academia, food business operators (FBOs) and private sectors, consumers, civil societies, UN agencies and WHO staff. This new document was prepared with support from the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) on Food Safety: Safer food for better health. It reflects feedback received through consultation process with Member States and governmental institutions, United Nations agencies and other intergovernmental organizations, academia, NGOs, private sector entities, and individuals working in public health and food safety. The vision of the strategy is to ensure that all people, everywhere, consume safe and healthy food to reduce the burden of foodborne diseases. With five interlinked and mutually supportive strategic priorities, the strategy aims to build forward-looking, evidence-based, people-centred, and cost-effective food safety systems with coordinated governance and adequate infrastructures. This strategy contributes to the achievement of the SDGs and will be reviewed in 2030 when the world will reflect upon the progress made towards the SDGs.
