First published in 1928, "Coming of Age in Samoa" is Margaret Mead's classic sociological examination of adolescence during the first part of the 20th century in American Samoa. Sent by the Social Science Research Council to study the youths of a so-called "primitive" culture, Margaret Mead would spend nine months attempting to ascertain if the problems of adolescences in western society were merely a function of youth or a result of cultural and social differences. "Coming of Age in Samoa" is her report of those findings, in which the author details various aspects of Samoan life including, education, social and household structure, and sexuality. The book drew great public interest when it was first published and also criticism from those who did not like the perceived message that the carefree sexuality of Samoan girls might be the reason for their lack of neuroses. "Coming of Age in Samoa" has also been criticized for the veracity of Mead's account, though current public opinion seems to fall on the side of her work being largely a factual one, if not one of great anthropological rigor. At the very least "Coming of Age in Samoa" remains an interesting historical account of tribal Samoan life during the first part of the 20th century. Although the "coming of age" story has been a popular film plot for decades, producers have only recently realized the commercial potential of targeting films to adolescent girls. Movies like Clueless, Legally Blonde and Mean Girls have been successfully marketed to teenage girls, as have several well-known independent films. Important as both cultural indicators and catalysts, these films simultaneously demonstrate pop culture's influence on girls' films, and the ability of girls' films to affect pop culture and perceptions of girlhood. This critical survey of film and the modern girl concentrates largely on films of the last two decades, addressing key themes for girls within "coming of age" films, the changing (but not always improving) young feminine paradigm, and the ways these films can be powerful determinants of culture. The first chapter explores the ways in which girls' films construct, reinforce, challenge and dismantle mainstream conceptualizations of sexuality, race and power. The second chapter discusses mainstream limitations of "coming of age" narratives, including recycled plots and stars, treatments of parental and male authority, and adult conceptualizations of adolescence. The third chapter describes girls' experiences within these narratives through such conventions as attitude, teen fashion, music and dance, unsanctioned rites of passage, and race. The Manley Paradox is the story of a romance between a young poor orphan and a rich girl whose father is not only arrogant and controlling but has something to hide. The boy, Chris, is a student in computer science but is so poor that he is actually homeless until one of his professors finds him sleeping in the woods. As an undergrad Chris becomes interested in the security of financial transfers. As part of his research he stumbles across the very rich Manly family that controls a financial transfer company. When Kyle Manly turns up at the same university, Chris is a first year grad student and she is in a freshman in a section that he teaches. He dislikes the Manly family based on what he knows about them but finds himself attracted to Kyle. Kyle for her part is infatuated with Chris and has no idea how to proceed. Kyle's father has given a grant to the university and Chris works on the grant. As part of his work he is asked to see if the company's security can be breached and whether he can take money without getting caught. This turns out to be a setup. Chris is eventually arrested and charged with theft. One must believe that in all young romance, love and truth should triumph.
