San Hilario de Poitiers (h. 310-367) fue, en Occidente, uno de los grandes defensores de la fe cristiana tal como fue formulada en el concilio de Nicea (325). Es conocido, sobre todo, por su gran tratado dogmático «De Trinitate» (La Trinidad [BAC, 1986]), pero es también autor de significativas obras exegéticas, como «Comentario al evangelio de Mateo», el primer comentario en latín a este evangelio que ha llegado íntegro hasta nosotros. Considerado durante algún tiempo como una obra de juventud sin valor especial, la reciente crítica ha modificado este juicio. Las grandes intuiciones trinitarias y cristológicas que se van a desarrollar en las obras posteriores están ya aquí claramente presentes. Hilario aparece como un vivo opositor de las doctrinas arrianas, aunque tal vez no conociera todavía el credo de Nicea.
