A Reference Grammar of Spoken Tamil
Author: Harold F. Schiffman
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521640749
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 260
Book Description
This is a reference grammar of the standard spoken variety of Tamil, a language with 65 million speakers in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore. The spoken variety is radically different from the standard literary variety, last standardized in the thirteenth century. The standard spoken language is used by educated people in their interactions with people from different regions and different social groups, and is also the dialect used in films, plays and the media. This book, a much expanded version of the author s Grammar of Spoken Tamil (1979), is the first such grammar to contain examples both in Tamil script and in transliteration, and the first to be written so as to be accessible to students studying the modern spoken language as well as to linguists and other specialists. The book has benefitted from extensive native-speaker input and the author s own long experience of teaching Tamil to English-speakers.

Author: S. Raman

ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 100
Book Description
These Tamil Lessons are targeted for such readers, so they may pick up the rudimentary Tamil language reading and writing skills. Instructions are given in English, with a bit of Hindi/Sanskrit letter symbols that could help in near-correct pronunciation. However, a bit of help from a good Tamil-speaking person will go a long way for the readers. More so, the readers are strongly advised not only to read but also to write down these lessons, as a matter of practice. After all, there is no more truth than the one conveyed by the old Tamil saying, “chiththiramum kaip pazhakkam, senthamizhum naap pazhakkam” (skill of writing is enhanced by handwriting, as the skill of speaking good Tamil is done through oral utterances).

Tamil Brahmans
Author: C. J. Fuller
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 022615274X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 289
Book Description
The Tamil Brahmans were a traditional, mainly rural, high-caste elite who have been transformed into a modern, urban, middle-class community since the late nineteenth century. Many Tamil Brahmans today are in professional and managerial occupations, such as engineering and information technology; most of them live in Chennai and other Tamilnadu towns, but others have migrated to the rest of India and overseas. This book, which is mainly based on the authors ethnographic research, describes and analyses this transformation. It is also a study of how and why the Tamil Brahmans privileged status within a hierarchical society has been perpetuated in the face of both a strong anti-Brahman movement in Tamilnadu, and a series of wider social, cultural, economic, political, and ideological changes that might have been expected to undermine their position completely. The major topics discussed include Brahman rural society, urban migration and urban ways of life, education and employment, the position of women, and religion and culture. The Tamil Brahmans class position, including the internal division into the upper- and lower-middle classes, and the process of class reproduction, are examined closely to analyze the congruence between Tamil Brahmanhood and middle classness, which as comparison with other Brahman and non-Brahman groups shows is highly unusual in contemporary India."
