Book Description
Excerpt from The Evolution of the College Student The college student is a being of infinitely complex and swiftly shifting phases which external description is powerless to catch and reproduce. The only way to portray his deeper nature is to place him in intimate and confidential relations and let him "give himself away." This kinetoscopic picture is presented in the hope that it may assure over-anxious parents that not every aberration of their sons is either final or fatal: persuade critics of college administration that our problem is not so simple as they seem to think: and inspire the public with the conviction, cherished by every college officer, that college students, with all their faults and follies, are the best fellows in the world; and that notwithstanding much crude speculation about things human, and some honest scepticism concerning things divine, the great social institutions of family and industry and church and state may be safely intrusted to their true hearts and generous hands. This sketch was drawn for the University Club of Buffalo in response to a request for something which would "show the graduate the inner life of the college of to-day." Under the title "His College Life," it was published in Scribner's Magazine for June, 1896, and it is through the kind courtesy of Charles Scribner's Sons that it appears in its present form. Book Description
Excerpt from American College Course As stated in the Introductory Note to the first volume of the present series, these books are in reality, as their names imply, popular studies. Everything in them has been written or prepared with the needs of the general reader or student in view as distinct from those of the professed special student. The intention has been to afford such information respecting the authors selected for treatment as will make the study of them not only a pleasure, but an easy pleasure. To that end broad and general views have been presented rather than minute and special ones. Pains have been taken to illustrate the personalities of the authors; to show them as they were as men and citizens, and in their private life and home relations. Very useful, we trust, will be found the notes prepared for readers for use in their own individual studies of the authors. These notes are sufficiently complete to meet the needs of all classes of readers - those who desire to go pretty far in their studies, as well as those who have time and opportunity to go only a little way. Although published in three volumes, these studies constitute one continuous series. Ten authors have been selected for treatment, the ten greatest names in American literature. The student-reader should not rest satisfied until he has made a pretty thorough acquaintance with the whole ten. Book Description
Excerpt from College Life, Its Conditions and Problems: A Selection of Essays for Use in College Writing Courses The remainder of the book deals with the student interests outside of the curriculum, such as general reading, recreation and athletics, college spirit, college morals, student government, etc. The second value that this material has for the course in English composition is that it enables the instructor to make the course incite to thinking and to intellectual expansion. In the composition course it seems wise to emphasize ideas, rather than literary models or set exercises, by allowing the student to encounter fresh and stimulating thoughts, which one may adopt and apply to one's own experience, or which one may combat or modify in accordance with individual conviction. To throw the emphasis upon formal matters is unwise and is an illustration of what Huxley has described as making the student practice the use of knife, fork, and spoon without giving him a particle of meat. But if the student is provided before he writes with the materials of thought in the form of some reading which, firmly thought out and clearly expressed, stimulates to thinking, the ways and means of clear expression assume new significance to him. The field of college life offers many inviting subjects for writing and oral discussion which are well within the comprehension and experience of the student. The selections in this book are therefore intended as a body of stimulating material. Though suggestiveness in point of ideas has been the main criterion of choice, these selections will serve well also as models of clear, direct, and incisive modern English. The selections have not been brought together for the purpose of representing the different types of discourse, but simply to set the student to the general task of correct and effective writing. It so happens, however, that these selections will readily serve as a basis for the expository and argumentative writing which, in most colleges, is the fundamental part of the first-year course in writing. Excerpt from Should Students Study? "Do not let your studies interfere with your college education." This motto adorns the walls of many a student's room. It is his semi-humorous way of expressing his semi-conviction that studies do not count - that the thing to go in for is "College Life." Book Description
Excerpt from Why Go to College Af ten ten years of travel among American college men, studying educational tendencies in not less than seven hundred diverse institutions in various parts of the United States and Can ada, it is my deep conviction that the chief need of our North American Educational system is to focus attention upon the individual student rather than upon his environment, either in the curriculum or in the college buildings.
