Book Description
Excerpt from Collections for a History of Staffordshire, Vol. 20: 1899 Evidence was to convince us that some of Canon Bridgeman's conclusions could not be maintained, and it became necessary for us thoroughly to revise the whole, and virtually to re-write a large part, of that portion of the work which we had hoped was almost ready for the press. If it had not been for General Wrottesley's kind encouragement and promise of help in case of need, we should hardly have ventured to attempt so much larger and more responsible an undertaking than we had anticipated; and we desire to take this opportunity of expressing to him our grateful thanks for his valuable advice and ever ready help, of which we have not hesitated to avail ourselves. We have endeavoured to ensure accuracy to the best of our ability by verifying all references and by collating with the originals at the Record Office, the British Museum, and elsewhere all extracts from inquisitions and other documents which had not already been published, but even in this matter we cannot expect to be entirely free from errors, while we are fully conscious that in other respects the work falls very far short of what a parochial history should be. We can only hope that this volume will be regarded by the members of the Society as an honest attempt by Canon Bridgeman's sons to fulfil their father's promise and complete the. Book Description
Excerpt from Collections for a History of Staffordshire, Vol. 11 This arrangement appears to the Committee to be very advantageous to the Society, for not only does the Library acquire a free issue of these valuable publications, but the Reviews of them which will appear in our volumes in future will throw much interesting light upon the County history, and add to the value of the Society's Collections. At the same time the Deputy Keeper gave to the William Salt Library five back volumes of the Rolls Series of which he happened to have a surplus supply, as a return for the Annual Volumes of our Transactions which he had received beforehand. Two volumes of Patent Rolls, 1429 - 1441, have already been received by the Library under this arrangement, and reviews Of them by Mr. Wedgwood will appear in our volume for 1908. The thanks of the Society are due to the Deputy Keeper, Sir Henry Maxwell Lyte, both for his courtesy in this matter, and his appreciationof the value of our publications, and they are likewise due to Mr. Wedgwood for the trouble he has taken and the tact he has shown in conducting these negotiations the publications known as the Rolls Series are the abstracts of the Public Records which are made under a. Treasury Grant, and upon which the most competent scholars of the day are employed. It is impossible to exaggerate their Value for historical purposes, and the collection of them in a central position at Stafford will not only be of the greatest assistance to local antiquaries, but will raise the William Salt Library, so far as mediaeval literature is concerned, into one of the most important reference Libraries in the Kingdom.
