Book Description
Richard Brauer (1901-1977) was one of the leading algebraists of this century. Although he contributed to a number of mathematical fields, Brauer devoted the major share of his efforts to the study of finite groups, a subject of considerable abstract interest and one that underlies many of the more recent advances in combinatorics and finite geometries.

Book Description
This volume contains a collection of papers from the Conference on Character Theory of Finite Groups, held at the Universitat de Valencia, Spain, on June 3-5, 2009, in honor of I. Martin Isaacs. The topics include permutation groups, character theory, p-groups, and group rings. The research articles feature new results on large normal abelian subgroups of p-groups, construction of certain wreath products, computing idempotents in group algebras of finite groups, and using dual pairs to study representations of cross characteristic in classical groups. The expository articles present results on vertex subgroups, measuring theorems in permutation groups, the development of super character theory, and open problems in character theory.

Book Description
This volume is a collection of published papers by Robert Steinberg. It contains all of his published papers on group theory, including those on "special" representations (now called Steinberg representations), Coxeter groups, regular nilpotent elements and Galois cohomology. After each paper, there is a section, "Comments on the papers", that contains minor corrections and clarifications and explains how ideas and results have evolved and been used since they first appeared.

The 120 papers collected in this volume were first published between 1926 and 1979. Brauer's mathematical impulse was remarkably steady, and his papers are equally distributed between those written before his fiftieth year and those written thereafter, including a number of contributions that were published after his formal retirement as Perkins Professor of Mathematics as Harvard in 1971.The papers are grouped into six sections following an autobiographical preface written for this collection. The first section contains twenty papers on the theory of algebras and is introduced by Oscar Goldman. The seventy-four papers on finite groups make up the second and largest section, which spans all three volumes. The final four sections complete the third volume and represent Brauer's contribution to Lie groups, number theory, polynomials and equations, geometries and biographies of Artin and Thompson.

Book Description
The impact and influence of J.-P. Serre ́s work have been notable ever since his doctoral thesis on homotopy groups. The abundance of findings and deep insights found in his research and survey papers ranging from topology, several complex variables, and algebraic geometry to number theory, group theory, commutative algebra and modular forms, continues to provide inspiring reading for mathematicians working in these areas, in their research and their teaching. Characteristic of Serre ́s publications are the many open questions he formulates pointing to further directions for research. In four volumes of Collected Papers he has provided comments on and corrections to most articles, and described the current status of the open questions with reference to later findings. In this softcover edition of volume IV, two recently published articles have been added, one on the life and works of André Weil, the other one on Finite Subgroups of Lie Groups. From the reviews: "This is the fourth volume of J-P. Serre's Collected Papers covering the period 1985-1998. Items, numbered 133-173, contain "the essence'' of his work from that period and are devoted to number theory, algebraic geometry, and group theory. Half of them are articles and another half are summaries of his courses in those years and letters. Most courses have never been previously published, nor proofs of the announced results. The letters reproduced, however (in particular to K. Ribet and M.-F. Vignéras), provide indications of some of those proofs. Also included is an interview with J-P. Serre from 1986, revealing his views on mathematics (with the stress upon its integrity) and his own mathematical activity. The volume ends with Notes which complete the text by reporting recent progress and occasionally correct it. Zentralblatt MATH

Book Description
Finite group theory is a topic remarkable for the simplicity of its statements and the difficulty of their proofs. It is used in an essential way in several branches of mathematics--for instance, in number theory. This book is a short introduction to the subject, written both for beginners and for mathematicians at large. There are ten chapters: Preliminaries, Sylow theory, Solvable groups and nilpotent groups, Group extensions, Hall subgroups, Frobenius groups, Transfer, Characters, Finite subgroups of GLn, and Small groups. Each chapter is followed by a series of exercises.
