To effectively meet marketplace demand, companies often initiate programs that will build their operational competencies. But such programs will only succeed when all of the components and individuals directly affected by these programs actually participate--and collaborate--in realizing these efforts. This paper examines a case study showing how one multi-national information technology (IT) service provider (The Enterprise Solutions (ES) Group of Infosys) implemented an aggressive and innovative effort to improve its operational competencies, an effort which involved its intense collaboration with thousands of consultants. In doing so, it overviews the state of India's IT services industry and overviews the three challenges that fast growing IT companies must confront. It lists the four objectives defining ES's growth plan, which consequently led to its establishing the ES Academy; it defines the four charters outlining the Academy's key goals. It then details the group's effort--beginning in 2003--to realize these objectives, identifying the effort's key collaboration-oriented strategies and describing the group's particular activities to implement these strategies and realize their competency-building objectives. It also depicts a metric that ES developed and used to track the effort's progression; it notes the efforts key issues, the group's responses, and the lessons that ES learned from implementing this effort.
