The Anthropocene, with the ongoing global changes in climate, land use, acidity, and content of toxins, represents the greatest recent challenges for plants. Clonal plants mainly reproduce vegetatively/asexually, and offspring remain attached to the parent at least until establishment. Despite limited gene recombination and genetic diversity, clonal plants are widely distributed and play significant roles in various ecosystems worldwide. Clonal traits, such as resource sharing and signaling between connected ramets, selective positioning of ramets, reallocation of stored energy/nutrients between connected ramets, initiation of meristem banks in response to clonal integration, and trade-offs between clonal and sexual reproduction, might help clonal plants adapt to different environmental conditions. The expression, fitness effects, and evolution of clonal traits can be influenced by environmental changes, which can be efficiently inherited and affects offspring performance, i.e., clonal parental effect. These adaptations may contribute to the survival, competition, invasiveness, and spread of clonal species in response to global climate change in the Anthropocene, from individuals to ecosystems. Understanding the capacity of clonal species to survive and adjust to changing environments is requisite but limited. Specifically, the unique traits of clonal plants have been underestimated, and their contribution to population, community, and ecosystem dynamics is unclear. The roles of clonality in ecosystem functioning (e.g., carbon storage, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycling, water and soil conservation, and water purification) need to be further explored. The contribution of clonal growth in plant invasiveness and community invisibility also needs to be addressed. Hence, there is an urgent need for more in-depth studies investigating the adaptation and evolution, mechanisms, functioning, and approaches of plant clonality to global change and invasiveness at different levels.

Clonal growth plays an important role in ecological functions and processes by allowing plants to rapidly inhabit open or disturbed areas, increasing competitiveness, and potentially altering the surrounding species composition. As clonal plants are frequently dominant in herbaceous plant communities, this study aims to add to the existing knowledge of intraspecific competition in clonal plants by specifically observing S. canadensis/altissima and S. gigantea in restored Wisconsin grasslands and in greenhouse experiments. This was done through a series of steps: (1) mapping Solidago populations at restored sites of different ages, (2) conducting a field experiment severing belowground connections between Solidago ramets at two sites (the Gateway and Keith White Prairie on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay's campus), where we observed patterns of biomass growth, neighborhood plant community diversity, and seed viability, and (3) performing a competition experiment in a greenhouse setting. In the mapping analysis, it was found that S. canadensis/altissima and S. gigantea are present at the developing restoration site and have the potential to spread quite rapidly. The field experiment found that neighboring species richness and diversity were higher in the Gateway and when S. gigantea was the focal ramet, and Solidago with severed ramets tended to produce more reproductive biomass in the Gateway when compared to the Keith White Prairie. Despite the higher species richness and diversity surrounding Solidago plants in the Gateway, the community-weighted mean Coefficient of Conservatism was higher in the Keith White Prairie, indicating a more mature habitat with prairie-specialist species. Solidago plants across all of our treatments had relatively low seed viability, despite their high abundance, indicating that they likely rely on vegetative growth for reproduction. From the greenhouse experiment, it was found that Panicum virgatum may compete less with S. gigantea than S. canadensis, and it grew larger with S. gigantea than when it was grown on its own, potentially indicating facilitation. The other competitor species (Rudbeckia hirta) grew significantly smaller when grown with S. canadensis compared to when it was on its own. Overall, we conclude that competition with S. canadensis and S. gigantea has the potential to alter species richness and diversity, as well as above- or belowground growth of neighboring plants, in a given plant neighborhood.
