C. L. Dellums and the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters helped to precipitate a sea of change in labor and race relations in California and the nation. Fundamental issues of unfair employment practices, discrimination, and segregation were confronted in new ways with consequences for all Americans. For the first time in U.S. history, a black labor union played a central role in shaping labor and civil rights policy. Based on interviews and archival research, this new book tells the story of Dellums and the impact nationally of his groundbreaking work. The BSCP, the first national union of black workers, was founded in 1925. C. L. Dellums, who worked as a porter in Oakland, became the West Coast organizer and was elected vice president in 1929. He held that position until 1968, when he succeeded A. Philip Randolph as president. In 1937, the BSCP made history when it compelled one of the largest U.S. corporations -the Pullman Company- to recognize and negotiate a contract with a black workers' union. This was unprecedented and almost inconceivable in the context of prior U.S. history. In 1941, at the beginning of World War II, the leadership of the BSCP, with the support of civil rights leaders, pushed U.S. President Roosevelt to issue Executive Order 8802 requiring the ending of racial discrimination in defense industries. Tens of thousands of black men and women would be hired to work alongside whites in wartime plants across the nation. C. L. Dellums was not only a labor leader. In 1948, he was chosen to be the first West Coast Regional Director of the NAACP. He also led the long struggle to get a fair employment practices law passed in California. The successful struggle contributed to the emergence of civil rights activism nationally and to equal treatment legislative initiatives in California and elsewhere.

The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) was the first national trade union for African Americans. Standard BSCP histories focus on the men who built the union. Yet the union's Ladies' Auxiliary played an essential role in shaping public debates over black manhood and unionization, setting political agendas for the black community, and crafting effective strategies to win racial and economic justice. Melinda Chateauvert explores the history of the Ladies' Auxiliary and the wives, daughters, and sisters of Pullman porters who made up its membership and used the union to claim respectability and citizenship. As she shows, the Auxiliary actively educated other women and children about the labor movement, staged consumer protests, and organized local and national civil rights campaigns ranging from the 1941 March on Washington to school integration to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Chateauvert also sheds light on the plight of Pullman maids, who—relegated to the Auxiliary—found their problems as working women neglected in favor of the rhetoric of racial solidarity.

"For more than a decade following 1925, one of the most widely discussed and debated issues in the black press was the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) and its efforts to gain recognition from the Pullman Company as bargaining agent for porters and maids. Indeed, the BSCP commanded attention out of all proportion to the relative importance of the 12,000 service employees at Pullman compared to the total black work force, especially when at one time the union had fewer than 700 members. Thus, this is not a book about the sleeping car porters as such, but a book about their union that focuses upon leadership. The charismatic A. Philip Randolph, articulating the porters' grievances and working in close relationship with his lieutenants (who organized the porters while he appealed for support among the public), was the central figure in the BSCP. Through effective use of propaganda, Randolph transformed the weak Brotherhood into a major movement for advancement of black people. But the study also shows how heavily Randolph relied upon his associates, individuals who by and large have remained in obscurity, but without whom the BSCP could not have succeeded.
