In August of 1862 Charles Roahr, a cooper and father of three sons from the small town of Petersburg, Ohio, enlisted, because of strong political feelings, in the Union Army. His letters home and his diary along with letters from his family and friends bare the real experience, concerns, tragedy and even humor of an ordinary soldier and the folks on the home front.The letters and the diary have been transcribed as closely as possible like they were written-line by line, page by page. Charles' spelling and grammar were problematic. There was very little punctuation.So, as the reader you must be patient. It may be difficult, at first, to follow the writings themselves with his particular pronunciations and lingo. Granted, editing may have made the content of these letters and diary easier to read but Charles' personality and identity would have been edited too. When sources were available, people, places and incidents have been referenced to expand the characters and venues involved from just names, to unique personalities and specific events.
