Book Description
When Jeremy Belknap and seven associates met in Boston on January 24, 1791, to establish the Massachusetts Historical Society, there was nothing like it anywhere in North America. Belknap, concerned that accident and carelessness were jeopardizing America's documentary heritage, proposed an organization to provide a secure repository for rare manuscripts and printed works and a publication program to "multiply the copies" of these valuable items. The Society that eight Boston gentlemen created that evening was the first institution anywhere for "the collection and preservation of materials for a political and natural history of the United States". The Massachusetts Historical Society: A Bicentennial History, 1791-1991, is a candid and detailed account of this remarkable institution's first two centuries. Despite its location and its name, the Society has never been a provincial institution, dedicated to chronicling the story of a single city or state. Through its incomparable library and publications, as well as through the writings of such illustrious members as Belknap, Francis Parkman, William Hickling Prescott, Samuel Eliot Morison, and scores of modern scholars, the Society has been - and continues to be - a profound influence on the study of a nation's history.

Book Description
Excerpt from Circular Letter Fellow Citizens. - In the first letter that we addressed to you, we confined ourselves, to a defence of the motives, conduct and character of the Carlisle convention; and endeavored, as we trust successfully, to prove, that the meeting at Carlisle had not one of the characteristics of a caucus, whilst that at Harrisburgh was distinguished by the most odious features of that pernicious substitute for free elections. It is our intention, in the present letter, to explain and defend the character, services and principles, of Mr. Joseph Heister, the candidate recommended at Carlisle, for the station of governor. In executing this duty, if we shall at all notice anonymous accusation or surmise, we hope that it may be understood as an evidence of our respect for public opinion, and of our willingness to meet even masked attacks. 1. Of his character. With regard to the private reputation of Mr. Heister, it is scarcely necessary to say more, than, that it has remained unsullied and almost unassailed a very uncommon circumstance, considering the length of his political life, and the licentiousntss of the press. It is said, indeed, that he is a man of wealth - as if it were a disgrace to have been always upright and industrious, and of course successful, as a farmer and merchant: If he had acquired his estate, from the public treasury, by a lease for life, of office, one might well regard the circumstance as an argument for rotation; but we consider it an honor to our candidate, that by his own means, he has become superior to the suspicion of mercenary temptation, or the necessity of mean dependence, which it would be well for the public in his opposers could say ot themselves. 2. As to the services of Mr. Heister, it is fortunate, that we can speak of them in the hearing of so many, who personally know their date and character.
