Book Description
Field-programmable analog arrays (FPAA) are integrated circuits with a collection of analog building blocks connected through a wire and switch fabric to achieve reconfigurability similar to the FPGAs of the digital domain. Like FPGAs, FPAAs can help reduce the time and money costs of the integrated circuit design cycle and make analog design much easier. In recent years, several types of FPAAs have been developed. Among these, FPAAs that use floating-gate transistors as programming elements have shown great potential in scalability because of the simplicity they provide in configuring the chip. Existing tools for programming FPAAs tend to be device specific and aimed at specific tasks such as filter design. To move FPAAs to the next step, more powerful and generic placement and routing tools are necessary.

Book Description
Large-scale reconfigurable and programmable analog devices provide a new option for prototyping and synthesizing analog circuits for analog signal processing and beyond. Field-programmable analog arrays (FPAAs) built upon floating gate transistor technologies provide the analog reconfigurability and programmability density required for large-scale devices on a single integrated circuit (IC). A wide variety of synthesized circuits, such as OTA followers, band-pass filters, and capacitively coupled summation/difference circuits, were measured to demonstrate the flexibility of FPAAs. Three generations of devices were designed and tested to verify the viability of such floating gate based large-scale FPAAs. Various architectures and circuit topologies were also designed and tested to explore the trade-offs present in reconfigurable analog systems. In addition, large-scale FPAAs have been incorporated into class laboratory exercises, which provide students with a much broader range of circuit and IC design experiences than have been previously possible. By combining reconfigurable analog technologies with an equivalent large-scale digital device, such as a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), an extremely powerful and flexible mixed signal development system can be produced that will enable all of the benefits possible through cooperative analog/digital signal processing (CADSP).

Book Description
This thesis describes the design and implementation of the Genetic Programming Intrinsic Circuit (GPIC) design system. Inspired by a number of recent advances in the field of Evolvable Hardware, the intended purpose of GPIC is to automate the design of analog circuits with minimal domain knowledge, computational resources, and cost using Genetic Programming with candidate solutions implemented in real hardware. This system has been constructed out of commercially available hardware and software, and the components were integrated through the development of a modular device-independent software system. The fitness evaluations of the candidate solutions of the Genetic Programming module are realized through a C interface to a National Instruments Data Acquisition Card. This Genetic Programming approach to analog circuit design decreases the fitness evaluation time of previous approaches by substituting expensive circuit simulation for real-time hardware testing. Since performing fitness evaluations in simulation is limited by the known model for a given environment, intrinsic testing provides additional benefit through the inherent incorporation of any unknown environmental conditions during tests. This feature is especially important for autonomous systems in unknown environments, and systems that must perform well in extreme environments.

Book Description
The tools and techniques you need to break the analog design bottleneck! Ten years ago, analog seemed to be a dead-end technology. Today, System-on-Chip (SoC) designs are increasingly mixed-signal designs. With the advent of application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC) technologies that can integrate both analog and digital functions on a single chip, analog has become more crucial than ever to the design process. Today, designers are moving beyond hand-crafted, one-transistor-at-a-time methods. They are using new circuit and physical synthesis tools to design practical analog circuits; new modeling and analysis tools to allow rapid exploration of system level alternatives; and new simulation tools to provide accurate answers for analog circuit behaviors and interactions that were considered impossible to handle only a few years ago. To give circuit designers and CAD professionals a better understanding of the history and the current state of the art in the field, this volume collects in one place the essential set of analog CAD papers that form the foundation of today's new analog design automation tools. Areas covered are: * Analog synthesis * Symbolic analysis * Analog layout * Analog modeling and analysis * Specialized analog simulation * Circuit centering and yield optimization * Circuit testing Computer-Aided Design of Analog Integrated Circuits and Systems is the cutting-edge reference that will be an invaluable resource for every semiconductor circuit designer and CAD professional who hopes to break the analog design bottleneck.

Book Description
This book aims to design CMOS programmable current mode building blocks and field programmable analog arrays (FPAAs). A detailed study of programmable current operational trans-conductance amplifiers (OTA) is presented. Five proposed fully differential digitally programmable OTAs based on using fully differential CCs and current division networks are presented. Two of the proposed OTAs are realized using CMOS current division networks while the other three OTAs are realized using MOS current division networks. The proposed OTAs CMOS designs and simulations are presented in details. All the proposed OTAs are digitally controlled using three-bit code word. A multi-standard baseband receiver chain suitable for Bluetooth/UMTS/DVB-H/WLAN standards is presented as an application using the proposed OTA. Three novel FPAA architectures are given based on the proposed OTAs. The FPAAs have hexagonal layout. Two of the proposed FPAA architectures are realized using fully differential CC and CMOS current division network based programmable OTA. The third FPAA architecture is realized using fully differential CCs and MOS ladder current division network based programmable OTA.

Book Description
This book introduces readers to a variety of tools for analog layout design automation. After discussing the placement and routing problem in electronic design automation (EDA), the authors overview a variety of automatic layout generation tools, as well as the most recent advances in analog layout-aware circuit sizing. The discussion includes different methods for automatic placement (a template-based Placer and an optimization-based Placer), a fully-automatic Router and an empirical-based Parasitic Extractor. The concepts and algorithms of all the modules are thoroughly described, enabling readers to reproduce the methodologies, improve the quality of their designs, or use them as starting point for a new tool. All the methods described are applied to practical examples for a 130nm design process, as well as placement and routing benchmark sets.
