Excerpt from Churches Between the Mountains: A History of the Lutheran Congregations in Perry County, Pennsylvania In May, 1859, tho Historical Society of the Lutheran Church in the United States passed the following resolution: "Resolved, That the ministers of our Church be requested, each to prepare a brief statement from church-records in his charge, of the date of the formation of each church, the successive pastors in charge, the present number of communicants, the language or languages employed in public worship, together with any important events in its history, and sketches of the life of the pastors, and forward the same in a letter by mail to our Curator, at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania." Previous to the passage of this resolution, the writer of these pages had prepared historical sketches of the churches of his own charge, and afterwards at the request of others he extended his researches to all the Lutheran congregations in Perry County. The result of his labors is now before the reader. Until a late date 110 church-records were kept by most of the older congregations, and as the aged who had some knowledge of their early history were passing rapidly away, it was thought that something should be done, and done soon, to rescue from oblivion the history of those congregations; it was thought, also, that such a history would be interesting and instructive to the present and future generations. Susquehanna University's history from 1858 to 2000 has occurred in three stages, each expressing a different mission. The school was founded in 1858 as the Missionary Institute of the Evangelical Lutheran Church to fulfill the vision of the Rev. Benjamin Kurtz, a Lutheran cleric and editor of the Lutheran Observer. He was a partisan of the American Lutheran viewpoint caught up in a fratricidal battle with Lutheran orthodoxy. The Missionary Institute sustained his viewpoint in the preparation, gratis, of men called to preach the gospel in foreign and home missions. A complementary purpose was to educate young people in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania at both the Institute and its sister school, the Susquehanna Female College. When the Female College folded in 1873, the Institute became coeducational.

Peter Scheibly/Shively (1742-1823), according to family tradition, was born in Switzerland, and immigrated to Pennsylvania before the Revolutionary War. He served with the Northampton County Miltia during the Revolutionary War. He married twice and was the father of eighteen children, born 1772-1805. The family moved from Berks County, Pennsylvania, to Tyrone Township, Cumberland County, now Perry County, Pennsylvania, in 1789. Descendants lived in Pennsylvania and elsewhere. Descendants spelled their surname Scheibly, Shively, Sheibley, and other variant spellings.
