Book Description
In June 1994, the Chinook helicopter ZD576 crashed on the Mull of Kintyre in bad weather, killing all 4 crew members and 25 civilian and military passengers on board. A Ministry of Defence internal inquiry found that the crash was caused by pilot error which amounted to gross negligence. The House of Lords appointed an ad hoc Select Committee in 2001 to examine whether this conclusion was justified. This publication contains minutes of oral evidence taken by the Committee from technical experts and RAF officials, as well as written evidence from a number of sources. It also contains the text of the RAF Board of Inquiry report into the crash, and the text of the statement by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch. Both reports have previously been treated as confidential.

Book Description
In June 1994, RAF Chinook helicopter ZD 576 crashed on the Mull of Kintyre in bad weather, killing all crew members and passengers on board. A Ministry of Defence inquiry found that the crash was caused by pilot error which amounted to gross negligence. This report presents the findings of the Select Committee appointed by the House of Lords, in July 2001, to examine whether this conclusion was justified. The Committee considered the evidence that was presented to the MoD inquiry, as well as additional written and oral evidence. This additional evidence includes: a weather report from the area at the time of the crash; information from helicopter pilots regarding the mechanical problems of the Chinook Mark 2 helicopters; and information as to the reliability of evidence provided by Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, who had used a mathematical simulation to determine the movements of the helicopter during the last seconds before the crash. The Committee's report states that it is not their role to determine the likely cause of this accident, and indeed on the evidence submitted, it would be impossible to do so. However, the Committee unanimously concludes that that the MoD inquiry was not justified in its finding that the crash was due to the negligence of the pilots. Boeing's conclusions cannot be relied upon as accurate, and it cannot be proven that there was absolutely no doubt whatsoever that some mechanical failure had not caused a loss of control of the aircraft. Please note: the first volume of evidence (HL Paper 25 (i), ISBN: 0104420227) and second volume of evidence (HL Paper 25 (ii), ISBN: 0104061022) are available separately.

Category : History

Pages : 230
Book Description
The 1994 crash of Chinook with top Northern Ireland intelligence experts on board into the Mull of Kintyre has remained the source of intense speculation ever since. The book is not only a full account of the incident and the subsequent on-going controversy over blame, but also attempts to solve the mystery about this accident. After the accounts of those who witnessed the crash or communicated with the aircraft on its fateful journey, the book analyses the activities of the crew on the day in question, including the maintenance record and the behaviour of the aircraft. This book will largely justify the claim of the RAF heirarchy that the cause was gross negligence by the crew, but not for the reason they give.

THE INCONVENIENT TRUTH DAVID HILL RAF Chinook ZD576 Mull of Kintyre, Scotland 2 June 1994 29 dead RAF Air Marshals blamed the two pilots. Their position was that the onus of disproving negligence was on the deceased. When the pilots were eventually cleared in 2011, Ministers and the Crown Office decided that was the end of the matter - true cause and culpability was now irrelevant. Why? Who benefits? The clues lay in what MoD had concealed. The families, Fatal Accident Inquiry and Parliament were lied to. For example, all were told that evidence removed from the crash scene before investigators arrived had been examined and could not have caused any harm. This outright lie was later exposed when documents MoD had denied the existence of were uncovered. This and other fresh evidence is examined here for the first time. The ends of justice have been defeated by those charged with administering it. Once again it is left to the public to publish the facts. Sit on Our Hands, or Stand on Our Feet?
Author: Roger Philip Abbott
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1725246848
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 456
Book Description
The aim of Sit on Our Hands, or Stand on Our Feet? is not to present a theology that explains disasters. In fact there is no such theology. Nor is this work primarily for those who are responded to; it is not part of the theological 'grab bag' that Christian responders carry with them to use for the benefit of casualties. It is more a part of the Christian's engaged practical theological apprenticeship prior to, and during, a response. This book represents the role of the practical theologian, who empowers the church community's legitimation and contribution in disaster response, and who encourages individual Christians--whose calling into particularly relevant professions, whose natural skills and/or professional training, could find them placed in a major incident responding status (paid or voluntary)--doing their work as unto the Lord. It is a serious must-read for any Christians who have hearts heavy with compassion but who are not sure what to do or why when disaster strikes.
