Book Description
Chess is not only a complicated game adults enjoy but also great fun for young children. There are many advantages of playing chess from a young age. Regardless of the child's age, chess develops concentration, increases patience and positively affects the intellectual and emotional development of the child. Chess is a game that develops perceptiveness, imagination and the ability to focus on a specific task. The development of the brain’s left hemisphere which is responsible for logical thinking takes place through counting combinations, whereas the development of the right hemisphere, which is responsible for creative thinking, occurs by arranging new plans and finding new non-standard moves in different positions. The diagrams in the book have been arranged in order from the easiest to the most difficult. At the beginning the child is told which piece to capture, for example a bishop. Then a few chapters later we can slightly raise the level and in chapter 5 the child is asked to capture a piece but without a hint of which one specifically. Because children between the age of 5-6 often do not see check, a full chapter is devoted to defending the king from being placed in check. One chapter is devoted to finding the checkmate in one move. I have also prepared a chapter dedicated to finding a fork and the goal is to find a move other than capturing. At the end of each chapter there is a friendly "chess critter" which is a reward for the child for correctly solving the tasks from the chapter. You can print a copy of the critter and let your child colour it the way they like. When your child gets a "chess critter" as a prize – it will make them happy and they will treat chess as fun instead of a very complicated and tiring task. The Author, Maksim Aksanov, wrote this book with the help of his 6 year old daughter. Through working with her, he could see which elements of the game are the most difficult for a child. He prepared a series of diagrams that allow a child to develop smoothly and learn this very difficult game. The basic problem that most or even all children have to face is perceptiveness. There are many different chess pieces and when they all come into play it can be confusing and cause the child to lose their concentration. Most often, children make mistakes such as they don't see a check, they don’t see the possibility of capturing a piece or they don't notice a checkmate in one move. One thing your child will appreciate most is that playing chess is also great fun and we all want our children to develop through play.

Book Description
"Many parents work more hours outside of the home and their lives are crowded with more obligations than ever before; many children spend their evenings and weekends trying out for all-star teams, traveling to regional and national tournaments, and eating dinner in the car while being shuttled between activities. In this vivid ethnography, based on almost 200 interviews with parents, children, coaches and teachers, Hilary Levey Friedman probes the increase in children's participation in activities outside of the home, structured and monitored by their parents, when family time is so scarce. As the parental "second shift" continues to grow, alongside it a second shift for children has emerged--especially among the middle- and upper-middle classes--which is suffused with competition rather than mere participation. What motivates these particular parents to get their children involved in competitive activities? Parents' primary concern is their children's access to high quality educational credentials--the biggest bottleneck standing in the way of, or facilitating entry into, membership in the upper-middle class. Competitive activities, like sports and the arts, are seen as the essential proving ground that will clear their children's paths to the Ivy League or other similar institutions by helping them to develop a competitive habitus. This belief, motivated both by reality and by perception, and shaped by gender and class, affects how parents envision their children's futures; it also shapes the structure of children's daily lives, what the children themselves think about their lives, and the competitive landscapes of the activities themselves"--
