Antimutagenesis and Anticarcinogenesis Mechanisms III
Author: Giorgio Bronzetti
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9781461529859
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 494
Book Description
Lifestyle, in any part of the world, is associated with the occurrence of major chronic diseases, including coronary heart disease, hypertension, and stroke; many distinct types of cancer; and adult onset diabetes (11,22,70,75). One important element of lifestyle is tobacco use, which appreciably increases the risk of a number of chronic diseases (21). Other lifestyle factors relate to nutritional traditions, alcohol use, and exercise (11,30,58,60,70,71). The underlying evidence is, in part, based on the evidence of specific diseases in relation to dietary habits in a given geographic region, as well as changes in such disease occurrences in migrant populations from a low risk to a high risk area, and vice versa (25,42). Populations that customarily consume fruits and vegetables and also whole grain cereal products generally have a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases and specific types of cancer than populations with a lower intake of such foods, everything else being equal (63). In the last few years, research has provided mechanistic explanations as to the reasons for the protective effects of specific foods. This paper will emphasize the mechanisms whereby cancer risks are reduced by dietary modification.

Evaluating Effectiveness of Primary Prevention of Cancer
Author: Matti Hakama
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 9789283221036
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 236
Book Description
This book examines the current state of evidence relating to the effectiveness of primary prevention measures. The identification of environmental and lifestyle factors as causes of cancer means that the theoretical basis for the prevention of cancer is well established. Despite this, there have been relatively few studies which examine the effectiveness of different strategies in reducing cancer-causing exposures, and even fewer where the results in terms of cancers avoided can be assessed. Most such evidence derives from observational studies, which show that changes in cancer incidence occur when diet or tobacco use are modified, even in modification is not the result of an organized preventive action. The occupational field too provides good examples of reduction in exposure to carcinogens if not always because of their carcinogenic hazard and consequent reductions in cancer incidence. This volume provides an in-depth study of four intervention studies, examining their outcome in terms of cancer risk. It also reviews the results of several other previously published studies, and provides a convenient summary of results as well as information on future prospects.
