Book Description
The dislocation structure and antiphase boundary energy at small angle grain boundaries in Ni-rich Ni$\sb3$Al were studied using conventional and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Ni-enrichment at APBs was shown to result in a lower APB energy at grain boundaries relative to the bulk, by replacing high energy Al-Al interactions with low energy Ni-Al and Ni-Ni interactions. The implications of lower APB energy for boundary properties are discussed.

Book Description
This volume is one of four, each of which consists of reprinted chapters from the highly acclaimed, comprehensive two-volume set Intermetallic Compounds: Principles and Practice, published in 1995. In some cases the author or authors have added a brief addendum to bring their chapter up to date and in other cases more recent references have been added. Chapters have been selected and grouped in subject areas to provide more easily accessible and user-friendly volumes for individual researchers. The other titles in this four-volume set are: Crystal Structures of Intermetallic Compounds Structural Applications of Intermetallic Compounds Magnetic, Electrical and Optical Properties and Applications of Intermetallic Compounds

Book Description
The majority of materials, especially metals, are used in the form of polycrystals. It is well recognized that many properties of polycrystalline materials are determined by grain boundaries (GBs). Grain boundaries appreciably affect many practically important mechanical and physical properties of construction materials. Grain-boundary diffusion plays a key role in such practically important processes as Coble creep, sintering, diffusion induced grain boundary migration (DIGM), various discontinuous reactions, recrystallization and grain growth. The purpose of this Volume is to provide a collection of recent contributions in the field of structure, thermodynamics and diffusion properties of grain boundaries and interfaces. The Volume includes reviews of both experimental and theoretical studies carried out by well-recognized scientists whose publications are well-known and widely cited.

Book Description
Over recent years the understanding of grain boundaries, interphase boundaries and free surfaces has advanced greatly, leading to a clear recognition that these discontinuities make a significant contribution to the physical and mechanical properties of materials from multiphase metals and alloys to electronic materials. Grain Boundaries -Their Microstructure and Chemistry discusses the interrelationship between microstructure and chemistry of the grain boundary, with particular emphasis on the influence of the environment (air, liquid and liquid metal) and composition (bulk and impurity). This highly practical volume presents a brief background to interphase and grain boundaries, before considering in detail grain boundary composition and composition changes, and how grain boundary composition affects material properties. Very recent advances in techniques such as electron energy loss spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and atom probe, and the facinating new insights into grain boundary, microstructure that they have revealed, are also discussed. Grain Boundaries - Their Microstructure and Chemistry is an indispensable text for design and safety engineers in many industries, including power and aerospace, as well as for materials scientists and engineers in academia and research institutes.
