Book Description
Could it be magic...? Chemical experiments are not only essential for teaching chemistry, they also fascinate the audience. This book is an excellent source of inspiration for every 'magic show' and classroom demonstration. In a very playful manner, the experiments described here open up the manifold, colourful, and sometimes ear-splitting world of chemistry. Ranging from unusual (but useful) properties of matter to the illustration of the greenhouse effect, this masterful chemist's 'cookbook' is highly suitable for preparing demonstrations in front of larger audiences. Building a bridge between science and the arts, every experiment is introduced by inspiring citations from prose and poetry, which makes reading and experimenting equally enjoyable. 'The remarkable achievement of Herbert Roesky's and Klaus Möckel's book is the linkage it achieves between the world of the human spirit, expressed in literature and historical continuity, and the art of chemical demonstration. One expects Goethe to move freely in the pages of 'Chemical Couriosities', but Whitman, Nietzsche, Thomas Mann, Salvador Dali, Montaigne and the Prophet Jeremiah! ... The chemical and literary strands of this book are so ably intertwined.' Roald Hoffmann

Book Description
Chemical health threats can have impacts across national borders and so may be more effectively tackled by international cooperation than by individual governments acting alone. As such, in November 2013, the European Union published the EU Decision for Serious Cross Border Threats to Health establishing a number of mechanisms for a coordinated, Europe-wide response with regards to preparedness, risk assessment, risk management, risk communication and international cooperation. Comprising a series of chapters from leading international researchers, this book covers recent developments in the field which support the implementation of these European legal instruments. It begins by contextualising the need for data that surveillance of toxic threats can deliver, before going on to examine some of the tools that have been developed to facilitate toxicosurveillance in Europe as well as current toxicosurveillance networks outside the EU. In addition, this book covers the European Union regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), and the work of the Alerting System for Chemical Health Threats (ASHT) project to improve the risk assessment and management of chemical health threats in Europe. The volume provides a vital resource for researchers, educators, policy-makers and practitioners with an interest in key questions facing global hazardous substance control.

Book Description
Written by the author of the award-winning "Chemische Kabinettstücke" this book demonstrates over 80 enjoyable, impressive and sometimes almost unbelievable chemical experiments for the classroom, lecture hall or home. All the experiments are explained in full, and have been tested several times such that their successful reproduction is guaranteed. Grouped into several cycles -- water, the color blue, the color red, soles, and self-organization -- the topics are perfect for experimental lectures or school projects. Detailed illustrations and the lively writing style make this book equally attractive to readers interested in chemistry, even if they are unable to perform the experiments.

Book Description
The chemical industry comprises the companies that produce industrial chemicals. Central to the modern world economy, it converts raw materials (oil, natural gas, air, water, metals, and minerals) into several different products. The Indian chemical industry is among the established traditional sectors of the country, playing an integral role in the national economic development. This sector, forming part of the basic goods industry, is a critical input for industrial and agricultural development. The fundamental nature and diversity of the industry is best understood from the fact that the industry itself is the largest consumer of its products, accounting for around 33% of total consumption. Alcohol is a very valuable material which has variety of uses such as for production of chemicals, as a source of energy and fuel etc. an alcohol is an organic compound in which the hydroxyl functional group (OH) is bound to a carbon atom. In particular, this carbon centre should be saturated, having single bonds to three other atoms. Some of the common examples of alcohol and its derivatives are acetaldehyde, acetic acid, chloroacetic acid, acetic anhydride, dimethyl acetamide, butyl alcohols, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, cellulose acetate, ethyl ether and many more. Ethanol can be used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, solvents, food, and chemical industries with a majority of industrial ethanol used as a solvent in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, paints, and lacquers. It is also used as a carrier in medicines. Some food extracts and flavourings can contain ethanol. It is also used in the personal care industry in products such as hairspray, mouthwash and cologne and in hand sanitizers and medical wipes. Some of the fundamentals of the book are manufacture of ethanol, absolute/anhydrous alcohol, barium acetate, calcium acetate, chromium acetate, cobalt acetate, copper acetate, lead acetate, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate monomer, poly vinyl acetate, film-forming latexes, non film forming latexes, styrene based resins, styrene polyester resins, styrenated oils and alkyds, ion exchange resins, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether (cello solve) etc. The book covers manufacturing details of various alcohol based chemicals. We hope that it will be very resourceful for new entrepreneurs, researchers, general information seekers and libraries as a reference book.
