Book Description
Charlotte Atlee White was the first woman officially appointed as a missionary by any denomination or mission agency. The scandal of her 1815 appointment required her to prevail over gender bias, survive attempts to revoke her appointment, and surmount the challenge of insufficient funding. After marrying Joshua Rowe, a widowed missionary in Calcutta in 1816, she remained in India to serve with the British Baptists. There she overcame local prejudice against educating girls while starting schools, teaching in Hindi, and writing a Hindi spelling and grammar book as teaching aids. She confronted a new scandal arising when her confidential correspondence was repurposed in America for anti-missionary propaganda. Her developing missiology critiqued the role of money in mission and the system of language acquisition for new missionaries. Based on sources in England, India, and America, her reclaimed story corrects numerous inaccuracies that appear in the few earlier references to her.

Book Description
Since their notable influence during the mid-eighteenth century, revivals have been a key element in the Baptist story: Survey histories of Baptists often discuss the impact of the First and Second Great Awakenings on Baptist growth during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. But following those initial revivals the Baptist narratives often shift to other important subjects and neglect later revivals. Yet revivals have remained a significant means to Baptist growth. This book addresses the larger story of revivals in Baptist from the Great Awakening to the present day and across the globe. Book jacket.

Book Description
With 110 million members worldwide, Baptists are surpassed only by Roman Catholic and Orthodox groups as the largest segment of Christians. The term 'Baptist' has its origins with the Anabaptists, the denomination historically linked to the English Separatist movement of the 16th century. Although Baptist churches are located throughout the world, the largest group of Baptists lives in the Southern United States, and the Baptist faith has historically exerted a powerful influence in that region of the country. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Baptists expands upon the first edition with an updated chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on important events, doctrines, and the church founders, leaders, and other prominent figures who have made notable contributions. This volume commemorates the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Baptist movement in 1609.

Book Description
Andrew Fuller (1754–1815) was a pastor whose ministry coincided with the revitalization of the English Calvinistic Baptist denomination of which he was a distinguished member. He was a pathbreaking theologian, apologist, and spiritual biographer, who throughout his career remained rooted in the local church. Yet despite his multiple achievements, Fuller was probably best known at the end of his life as a pioneering missionary statesman. He was one of the founders and principal advocates of the Baptist Missionary Society, serving as the new society’s secretary from its inception in 1792 until his death. His Apology for the Late Christian Missions to India was published in 1808 to defend the BMS missionaries from those who wanted them recalled from ‘British India’ for damaging colonial interests. In the Apology, Fuller shares his passion for overseas cross-cultural mission, a passion which came to define his ministry for many of his contemporaries and also, to a significant degree, for subsequent generations. In the Apology Fuller advocates on their behalf. This new edition of the Apology includes a 30,000-word introduction setting the context, and full notes on the text itself. It is of interest to theologians and missiologists as well as specialists in the history of Christian cross-cultural mission, colonialism, and the intersection between the two.

Book Description
"Walter Rauschenbusch's thought made an indelible and enduring impact on the Christian world and beyond. Scores of books and hundreds of articles have rediscovered the implications of his work in church history, ethics, politics, gender studies, international relations, German American cross culturalism, Christian spirituality, Baptist religious identity, and the Liberal and evangelical theological perspectives. His writings made an immediate impact upon publication, and have been reprinted over the years since by many different disciples. A roster of distinguished and younger scholars plumbed the depths of Rauschenbusch's impact on the Christian Tradition. Rauschenbusch biographers Gary Dorrien and Christopher Evans assess Walter's place in the course of American religious thought, particularly the Liberal tradition. A second group of papers is devoted to the extent of the Rauschenbusch legacy and includes writers Andrea Strèubind (the German context), Adam Bond (Samuel D. Proctor as a disciple of the Black Social Gospel), Roger Prentice (the Canadian Context), and Chakravarthy Zadda (the Telugu mission context in India). A third cluster features specific aspects of the Rauschenbusch legacy: Wendy Deichmann (gender and the family); Darryl Trimiew (the Black Church); Dominik Gautier (postcolonial reflection by a European); and Christina Littlefield (Rauschenbusch as a Muckraker). Gathered under the heading of "The Largeness of the Rauschenbusch Legacy" are essays by Heath Carter (Rauschenbusch's place in history); David Gushee (an analysis of Rauschenbusch's Kingdom ethic); and William Brackney (Rauschenbusch's contribution to Baptist life and thought). Of particular interest is the personal reflection by Paul B. Raushenbush, great grandson of Walter." --provided by publisher
