Book Description
The economics and sociology of the relationship between training and employment in Europe were examined through a comparative study conducted in six countries: Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. In each country, teams of researchers used a standardized methodology to collect the data needed to estimate (over a period of approximately 10 years) the structure of occupational skills triggered by the following: the rise in the level of education of successive generations (supply model); the variation in the strength of the occupational work force (demand model); and the two effects simultaneously (simultaneous effects model). The three models were used to establish a common "occupations, age, and certification" job market database for the six countries. Analysis of the database established that, even outside regulated occupations, there is a preferential deployment of certain certificates in certain occupations. The internal certification structures within occupations were themselves closely correlated to the age of the work force. In all six countries, the continuing rise in the level of education was spread over all occupations in proportion to initial skill structures. (The report contains 25 references. Appended are information on the study methodology and 10 figures and tables.) (MN)

Book Description
Education for Life: A European Strategy critiques the educational system in European countries and offers suggestions for its improvement as well as solutions for its problems. The book is divided into six parts. Part I deals with topics such as the revitalization of education; the cooperation of industry and education; and the training of some companies. Part II is concerned with the present trends, major issues, the thrust of positive action, and industry involvement in the education of the youth. Part III talks about the higher education in Europe, its comparison with other educational systems, and proposals of action for its problems. Part IV covers vocational education; the new technologies and occupations it offers; and the businesses involved in training and education. Part V tackles management education; management development practices; and the European management model, while Part VI discusses lifelong learning and adult education; the restructuring of industry and work; open learning; and the obstacles to progress in adult education. The text is recommended for those in the education department, especially those in European countries, who are making studies on education and the approaches to its problems.

Book Description
When seeking to bench mark the performance of European economies, commentators often look to compare them to the economies of Japan and the United States. How Europe's Economies Learn shows how this is seriously misleading, and how any such comparison needs to be complemented with an understanding of the fundamental differences between Europe's economies. The contributors provide an up-to-date description and analysis of the way differences in state systems and institutional contexts, such as labour markets, education and training systems, and financial systems, shape learning processes and innovation performance across the member nations of the European Union. In doing so, it draws important conclusion for how policy strategies should be designed at the national and European levels in order to further promote the goals of the Lisbonprocess.

Book Description
" With the first volume of Bochum Studies in International Adult Education we are launching a new series of publications from the Chair of Adult Education at the Ruhr-University of Bochum. BSIAE addresses not only researchers, university teachers and students of adult education but also those from related disciplines. While not explicitly addressing practitioners, except for providing them with up-to-date research overviews, each issue will also address politicans and policy makers. Each volume will be organised around one topic or issue which is of interest, importance or of particular relevance for adult education in general. This particular topic will be considered from various points of view, i. e. comparative, historical, gender, socio-political and cultural. The first volume of BSIAE intends to look closely at the topcis Language - Mobility - Identity and attempts to discuss these issues from the point of view of adult education. The intention of this volume is to create a compilation of different viewpoints and critical analyses on the three topics which together form an overview of their interrelation and their relevance for European development, adult education and adult's learning. Book Description
In the new global economy, where rapid technological change is the norm, the skills of the workforce are a key to local economic vitality. This practical book shows how cities and regions can invest in their long-term prosperity by expanding opportunities to ensure that all citizens have competitive skills, and by aligning workforce development systems to existing and emerging industry needs. Clearly written, generously illustrated, with an effective blend of theory and practice, "People and the Competitive Advantage of Place" documents the challenges and opportunities involved in workforce development, effective approaches for resolving contemporary problems, what traps to avoid, and strategies for investing in the workforce of the future. The author integrates ideas and techniques from the fields of workforce development, economic development, and community development to present a comprehensive guide to approaching workforce needs from a city or region-wide perspective. Each chapter presents lessons from relevant research; experiences from private, public, and community-based approaches; and evaluations of what is working and why.
